cv 40/1.4 or m-rokkor 40/2 or c-sum 40/2

You can get by w/out a hood on the Skopar 35 - It's pretty flare resistant. Otherwise, get the one at the best price. jsrockit is right: they're all good.

I like reading an advise thread and finding that the first response provided is the best.

Sometimes things are simple. You can't go wrong with any of these lenses. I had a 40 Rokkor which I would love to have back, but I currently have the 35 Skopar and don't feel a need to change from it.
 
depends what you're looking for. as I recall you've got a slower lens now - how much faster do you want?

that said, i sold my Summicron-C 40 and later CL body, and were I looking at M's again, would look for a 40/1.4 as my first lens. more for character than speed though.
 
paul i recently bought a 'nonworking cl' with 40-c cron for $400 total on ebay. the cl is being fixed as we speak and the 40 cron is one of the best lenses ive ever used, as well as the tiniest. ive used noktons, and while i'm sure you'd be happy with them, ive not liked them nearly as much as the cron, and i dont think you can find the kind of deal i did on the nokton. images from the cron just leap out at you, and the color is superb. i personally find the nokton images a little flat by comparison. of course these feelings are all subjective.

and yes, skopars are nice, really nice, in fact on an IQ only basis, i'd prefer it to the noktons. but its still not the cron and 2.5 is not 2.0, which is helpful to have.

you might consider also the cv ultron 35/1.7, which i like better than the noktons. used to be you could get one at a decent price, i'm not sure about the price today, but qualitatively i put it just below the cron.

I believe 35 and 40 are close enough.
All these lenses seem great.
I had the cron-c and the skopar, and well, they are both really good.
I think that the skopar is a winner on every other parameter IF you can live with f/2.5.
Otherwise, the tradeoff seems between older, more expensive lenses and the new Nokton that may or may not suffer from QC variability.
I am considering the Nokton myself to have at least one fast lens, and need to check first how the M6 frames are with the 40mm.
If you choose the f/2 40's, maybe the filter size is something to consider..
But as all have said: no looser here, me thinks..

never tried the 40 rokkor, though Judging by Gabor's Photos its Stellar

at Present I am using the Nokton 1.4 and it Reminds me in some of its Subtleties of the 35 pre asph Lux
Had the 40 cron in the Past...Wonderful Character Indeed

Roland has/had a ltm nikkor f2.5/35mm set with filter in the classified for a great price. For what you seem to like (greater tonal range) I think you should check it out. I love the 40mm cle lens for its compact size, perfect contrast, and rendering on digital. Since discovering the nikkor, it's been my favorite for bw film.

The color skopar f2.5/35mm is pretty high contrast IMO. Best to consider that property. All the versions of that lens share the same optics. I liked the ltm version best for its tiny size and funky focusing tab.

Hi Paul,

I would agree, they are all fine lenses...
The real question involves the framing.
What would you be comfortable with - viewing at 50mm, or filing the lens to show the the 35mm lines.
