Is there really over $200 worth of difference between the 2 lenses? Is there a difference at all besides the FOV? can anyone tell me what frameline the CV 40mm pulls up on a Zeiss Ikon? The 35mm I would assume.
When I had a Bessa R3m, that CV 40mm MC was one hell of a sharp lens.

although the general belief is that both lenses draw very similarly, the 35 has an extra element in it. and prolly that alongwith the 35 framelines are sufficient for the price difference.

The 40mm will bring up the 50mm lines on a ZI (or a Leica M). It is possible to grind the mount down in order to force it to bring up the 35mm lines instead, although you will then be rendering it useless to anyone with a camera with automated 40mm lines (Leica CL, Minolta CLE).

The lenses do have a very obviously similarity in their rendition, but as infrequent says, the optical formulas are different and the 35mm is also a slightly more compact design.

It is rather hard to believe the rather large price difference, but if it was me I would buy the 35mm one if that is what you are looking for. Seems it would be worth the money to avoid and potential hassles of modifying the lens or missing something in a shot because of the 5mm difference you though you had

My modified CV40f1.4 (to bring up 35mm framelines) still works perfectly on my CL. It is only with a CLE that there will be a frameline problem.

Hey Akiva. 😀

The 40mm on the Zi brings up the 50mm framelines. But according to numerous people (including Roger Hicks) the 35mm framelines on the Zeiss Ikon are closer to 40mm than it would be with the 35mm lens and 35 framelines.

In essence with the 35mm your going to have much more space on the actual photograph than is shown by the framelines.

Whereas the 40mm would show pretty much exactly (or quite close0 to the 40mm framelines.

If I were to purchase either of the lenses I would purchase a second hand 40mm (they sometimes go for as low as 250 around here) and modify the lens mount. You have to file off just a tiny sliver of metal and it brings up the 35mm framelines. Its very simple to do apparently and takes just seconds.

Personally i cant justify buying the 35 nokton when the 40mm nokton is the exact same lens signature and even matches the 35mm framelines of the ZI better than the actual 35 does.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, but is that tiny sliver self evident?

With the 35 being a new lens I think you will find it will reduce in price when they are more readily available on the market, just like the 40mm did and others in the Voigtlander line. Choice for me would be based on what camera you have. If you have one with 35mm framelines then thats the way to go and the same with the 40mm. There is no need to tinker with mounts any more with the 40 now that the 35 is available.

here are a few sample shot with my nokton 40mm 1.4 SC

I think that I even like it better than my first version summilux 50mm.
