CV external light meter & alternatives - new to this

hello dear RFFers,

I just bought a medium format folder (i know i know.. GAS attack.. but it's 6x6!! *drool*, mint!) - and it has no inbuilt light-meter. (it's a Zeiss Super Ikonta 531/16).

does anyone use the tiny CV clip-on light meter on a regular basis and can comment on its viability? is the only readout via the top LEDS?

considering the form-factor I really like it, though it seems limiting somehow. an alternative would be the sekonic twin-mate, which is in my budget and seems more versatile, albeit comparatively huge. would that be better, in your books? it, err, looks like more of a beast.

I use the CV II mounted on the hotshoe and for me it works well. I have not compared it with others but easy to operate!

that is a very cool setup!!

is it always clear what you're pointing the meter at? considering that its measuring cone is probably very slim...?

Noci, the CV II is a brilliant meter and very easy to use. It is uncannily accurate and sensitive. I have tested it against 3 other meters and it is consistently spot on. The way in which the dials are arranged gives you a choice of apperture/shutter combinations too. Makes the other clip-on seem huge - but is a bit pricey!

hmmm yes, the price - compared to its "feature set" - is an issue... but I've made the mistake once to sacrifice portability for featuritis.. and learned the hard way that if you can't always carry the gear you use, it's pretty much worthless sitting at home. hence, the CV seems brilliant. guess I'm sold on it. darn 🙂
