Seems we were just talking about this in passing, and up it pops on my Google news search agent. I wish I were in Prague right now.

PAST & PRESENT OF CZECH PHOTOGRAPHY

The Prague House of Photography (PHP) is a cultural institution specialized in photography which has a unique significance within the Czech Republic. PHP´s long-term history, as well as great professional reputation in the field of visual culture, enable it to extend and intensify its activities and strategies.

There is some great stuff here. Artists that never got the recognition they should have, since they were stuck behind the Iron Curtain. They really found their own voice, uniquely Czech, and I appreciate it. Cool stuff.

Just my opinion, but I am still trying to collect affordable examples of their work and trying to emulate it in my own way.

I started learning about the Czech 'Avant-Garde' photographers after a visit to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts a couple years ago. They had an exhibit on Art Deco that including some of the photographic work from that decade that appeared in various World's Fairs. I was blown away by the photos, so I did some more research and I am still fascinated and can't find enough information about these incredible phtographers. I'm glad you guys enjoyed this - I keep a Google search agent running at all times for the Avant-Garde photographers. I had not had a hit in awhile, though.

Best Regards,

Bill,

This is one of my favorite periods of 20th century photography, and some of my favorite photographers. Nice to know others enjoy them as well.

I still have to dive into Rodchenko and co, and now you come up with this, Bill! I don't have that much free time! 🙂

i took a photo workshop in paris this past september and one of the guest speakers was Voya Mitrovicht, a printer at picto that printed for koudelka and hcb, among others. meeting him and listening to his stories was an amazing thing, knowing that because of his talents we were able to see the fabulous prints that we have all seen. seeing koudelka's work as prints and not just in a book or on the web was an almost religious experience. if you don't know josef koudelka's work i urge you to go to the library and look at his books. things will never be the same for you.

Thanks for the link Bill, I have been checking out Czech photography for a while, it seems a distant relative of mine, Jiri Hanzelka, was an explorer of sorts and documented his finds with photography. The had several books published and were quite well known in their time.
