See this listing from, ahem, former Soviet Union locale. Did Zeiss even make such a lens? SN if genuine would be 1938.

not actually
No 25mm lens designed with 35mm coverage in mind would have a front element that's so recessed...

16mm or 9mm or 8mm cinema lens.

Add to that, a 25mm Sonnar is highly improbable.

Actually is that a C-mount on the back? This would explain how a 25mm can be a Sonnar, I guess. I have but the vaguest knowledge of this.

Yes, I see Put Some Bleachers up in the Sun has answered my final question while I was writing it.

Lens is for the Movikon cine camera, according to Hartmut Thiele's book of CZJ lenses with production date of Jan 1939. I don't know if this is the 8mm or 16mm version.

Thank you Dex. When I thought it must be some sort of knock off I was surprised at 1. the quality of the lettering and 2. that it had a real serial number. For some reason the knock offs almost always have some sort of obviously bogus serial number. Anyway, thanks everybody.

Should be a nice lens for M4/3 and the like, no?

The rear element will probably hurt the sensor and otherwise the results would for sure be poor. Not even speaking of chromatic aberrations in front of a sensor etc, take for granted that cinema lenses don't achieve good optical performances especially in the corners - you don't inspect the corners of the image with a 20x magnifier when you're watching movies and eating popcorn, in general.
