Just wondering if anyone here has experiance cleaning fungus from one of these? I'm watching one on the bay and trying to decide if it's worth the cost.

I asked if he could describe how extensive the growth is and this was his answer:

"I have to look closely and tilt the lens a certain way to see the fungus but it's definitely there.

Looks like cottony fibers extending inward from the edge about 1/4 of the way. I think it's only on one element but I am not an expert on this.

The lens also has cleaning marks on the front."

Any ideas?

Sounds like the seller is being honest at least. I am not a risk taker, nor have I ventured into taking apart my equipment and doing home repairs, so I am not the best person to answer your question.

But...

The last couple CZ 1.5 Sonnars, West German lenses, that I have watched have sold for under $200. These lenses are in nice shape too. I wouldn't spend too much on a fixer-upper thinking that it needs a CLA which would bump the cost for me up.

If you can get it ~$75 or so, I would pick it up. If the fungus is not too extensive, it will have a minimal effect. If it is really bad, the lens can be polished down to take the coating off. I am always amazed hat how defects in lenses look "nasty" but the pictures come out fine.

Heh. Well, I've bid the max I can afford right now, so if it does, it does. Thanks for confirming what I thought.

Just for information, if you are on cleaning the lens yourself...

One of the very best fungus removing way is using Pond's cold cream. Really, it's not a joke. Put a small amount on your finger and clean the lens with low pressure, slow circular movements. If the fungus was not removed then only polishing with cerium oxide in a special polishing machine.

To remove the cream, use first soap and water, then rinse with Isopropyl Alcohol (don't use in palstic lenses).

Have fun!
