d40x - initial likes/dislikes

D200s were recently $599 new, but still not that interesting to me. What are S5s going for these days?
Fuji are almost done selling them off. The last 40 were shipped to Calumet in London a couple of weeks ago. The best prices are still out of the UK and you can get one from Ffordes in Scotland for US$588 at today's exchange rate with the UK£. Ffordes web price is inclusive of VAT and the 15% tax is removed in the checkout. If you buy from them get email confirmation beforehand that they will ship to you by Royal Mail (and not UPS).

I looked at the 60 the other day and was pleased with the brightness of the viewfinder. Has anyone looked side by side at both with the same lens on that could comment? I've read a lot about the pains of the 40's viewfinder and just wondering. I was fine with a 2.8 lens on the 60 and wondering if the 40x is the same or worse.

Thanks.

Antiquark,

I really like your Game Tension photo. It's a wonderful shot. I'm not a big digital fan but the look of this is really nice. I think the noise actually works to your advantage here. It gets rid of the usual plasticy look of many digital photos.

Nice work.

I think they are the same

Hopefully someone will answer with a defnitive answer, but everything I've read indicates the prisms are the same.

J&R/buy.com have a refurb D60 kit for 399, Costco/Amzn have the D40 kit for around $400 new. Not sure, but Newegg may still have D40x refurb bodies for $279.

I sold my D40 after 6 months of use. Spectacular camera, and the best DSLR I've ever used. The D300, D60, and all those other Nikons are too big and heavy for regular use for me. The Canon cameras feel too cheap and I hate their menus. I sold it because I got sick of digital but I loved it while I had it. Excellent quality photos and it was a great size. The D40x is basically the same camera. If I were to recommend any DSLR to anyone, it'd be the D40 for sure. I printed off an 8x12" from a D40 shot and it was excellent quality--the extra pixels in the D40x are unnecessary for most consumers.
