Great camera, Keith. And that Zeiss 50? What a great lens. Some folks may not think it's pretty as a Leica, but the D700 is great at doing what a camera should do, producing photos. So, show us some photos made with it! 🙂

Congratulations on your purchase, Keith, just like it says in the manual! What a scare that must have been — the darkened viewfinder. That viewfinder is my only (small) gripe. It only goes to +1 adjustment and I need +2 so I had to buy an eyepiece diopter anyway.
Since I've had my D700 I only have my Bessa R2 for a rangefinder. My theory is, like yours, I will use my D700 to produce revenue to save for an expanded RF system. How is that working out for me?
I squander the money on food and house repairs and living expenses. The Leica fund is not growing very fast. I hope you have better luck!

Congrats man! I love mine. Use it with manual focus (Ai-S) lenses mostly. Manual focusing is a bit of a pain in the a$$, eye jumpingfrom the subjetcto the little focus confirmation dot at the bottom. I might have to get that special screen people keep talking about.
Don't forget - when using Ai-S lenses set the lens profile in the menu and quickly scroll through profiles as you change (Ai-S) lenses.

Congratulations on your new camera! Does it have the 4x5 viewfinder mask setting? That's one thing I'd love my 5DII to have. Canon sells a special focusing screen with lines for 4x5 but they're incredibly expensive.

Don't know about the Nikon, but getting the EE-S screen for my 5D made a huge difference in manual focusing lenses.

Congrats on the D700. Yea, it may be ugly but it usually works. I don't know when the firmware change was made but as I said before the latest one really made the AWB better. If you are lucky yours has it already from the factory.

At the moment I don't think Nikon offers any alternate focusing screens for the D700 that would make focusing MF lenses easier. You are stuck with aftermarket screens from a few sources such as Katz Eye and others or making your own by cutting down screens from Nikon F models to fit.

that d700 is indeed a brilliant camera. the battery life is exceptional so not much to worry about viewfinder wise. the finder is really an overlooked plus on that thing.
Canada Post must be taking notes from Aus Post these days. i have rung them up three times asking what the hell i need to do... pave the driveway in rubies and leave gucci slippers at the end to get them to walk to my door?

Has any Evil Crazy folks done this unnatural act successfully? Do tell how? Sounds like just the thing to do during the Vernal Equinox!

I made the mistake of buying a Zeiss 35/2. It's too big, but then the D700 is too big as well. After you get past that and take pictures, the lens is so perfect that you just want to try the others. I'm eager to see what the replacement for the 25/2.8 is like. If it's a 24/2 (like Sony have just announced), then I may need one of those, too.

I like both my D700s but usually only one gets used regularly since I need to have a backup body/grip.
The high iso is really good. I rarely go above ISO 4000 but 6400 is perfectly fine imho.
Lately I've taken a liking to the Nikon 50mm f1.4 AF-S G lens..

Chiming in with congratulations Keith! Hope it performs well for you you and gets you a lot of side jobs. Post 'em when you get 'em. Sometime this year I hope to get a D700 also.

Eventually I admitted that I was never going to buy an M9, and likely not even an M8, and that film (which I like) was keeping me from taking pictures. So I sold some CV LTM lenses and got a D700.
Once you get used to the size, it really is a lot of fun. And it works in the dark, which is the main reason I was using Leicas in the first place.

Congrats on the D700. I had the same experience as you about six years ago when I bought my D100. I was anxious to check it out, unpacked it, put a lens on it, and immediately thought it was defective because of the dim VF 🙂.
I would love to get a D700 to use with my many manual focus Nikkor lenses, one of these days in the far future when I have some extra $$$ 🙂

Now, you must go out and shoot in low light... but be aware: at very high ISO (5000 or 6400) and in low light with concentrated sources (like streetlights), you may find some weird streaking across or along the frame. It is normal... and also indicates that you're pushing the sensor's limits. In the photo below, I had to dial down the ISO in order to avoid the problem I told you about and that's why it appears clean.
In any case, enjoy!
