Just another to help your gas along. JPEG FINE at 3200. A little USM in PS Elements 2.0 and resize for web. I think tensai is right in that it is not all about high ISO but it is there if you need it. There is so much more to like about the D700, if you can stand DSLRs. I think I can.

Alright, Bob... in a very sunny day, with an intensely blue sky, you won't be shooting at ISO 3200 and the like, right? How does your camera perform at, say, ISO 100 or 200?

Just wondering. Most of the samples I've seen online show the ISO set at high levels. I'm not thinking of using this camera always at those speeds, but cannot see a sample at a less "impressive" ISO. Please, advise, as I have already decided to buy one in about a year, when I gather the funds.

I have not shot at 100 ISO but here is a nothing sample of 200 ISO. Again JPEG FINE and USMed in PS Elements 2.0. The B&W version was a straight quick and dirty grey scale conversion in PS.

Well I'm added to the RFF D700 user list as of yesterday, and I'm beyond impressed - the files are great and it's an amazing camera to use - fantastic build, ergonomics etc., and a proper full size viewfinder like an old film SLR.

I'm seriously questioning whether all my film cameras have finally become obsolete. And you can shoot more or less noise free at ISO 3200, which is just ridiculous. Here's an RFF style shot from this afternoon, cropped from a lot less than half the image area - the grain was all added in Photoshop 😀

What type of glass did you use for these samples?

BTW, I intend to use mine with a 24-120 VR lens (dare I call it version I?). I'm expecting delivery of a Sigma AF 24-70 for my F5. 🙂 Can't wait! 😱
 
Thanks, Steve! I suddenly recalled that this one is an FX camera. 50mm is 50mm... forever! 🙂

Have you considered getting other AI lenses? At this point, they're not that unaffordable... And they'll work well with your D700.

I'm probably going to get a standard zoom like the Tamron 28-75 next, but I might try a 35mm AIS as a wider "street lens" - although the 35mm AF-D is supposed to be better. And once I have some spare cash again (could be a while!) I'll be getting the Zeiss ZFs to replace the ZM's I'm having to sell to fund the D700 🙄

Thanks for the sample. I can stand DSLRs. I am an early adopter of the Nikon D100 (paid $1995 for the body alone). I've been happily using it ever since alongside my stable of Nikon film slrs (F4s, F3HP, F2). I avoided buying DX format lenses for my D100 because I wanted my lenses to be compatible between my film SLRs and my D100. Now I'm glad I did because I definitely see a FX Nikon DSLR in my future. Now, that future may be a long time from now given that the D700's price is a lot more than I'm willing to spend at the moment.

I'll just keep plugging along with my D100 for now, along with my slew of film cameras (slr, rf, p&s, medium format, etc.).

The dog was shot with an old Nikkor 70-210/4 AF and the others with a Tamron 20-40/2.8-3.7. I have used the following ai or factory ai'd lenses, 50/1.4, 28/2.8, 35/2, 85/1.8, 105/2.5, 200/4 and an 18/4. Just some quick and dirty trial shots with the manual ai lenses but they appear to work good enough for me. If you enter the lens FL and aperture in the appropriate menu area you get that in the exif data. The camera is just a blast to use.

Hey folks.

I've had a D3 for a while, and generally love it. Though not the weight so much. Be torn as to whether i'd get one again or the newer D700. The 100% viewfinder is nice, the bulk is less so.

Anyways seeing as its the same sensor here's a link to full res shots taken with my D3 at all ISOs. Its not always as capable but it shows whats possible with an evenly properly exposed shot

I think the ISO 25600 shot is pretty impressive for what it is.
