What DAG needs to do is raise his prices, this will lower his work load and he'll make the same or more money, and things will move faster. Oops, did I say that?![]()
Considering your paint job you did on my M3, I think your price is too low

Don't know, Raid. Plus, with a Sonnar, it's very difficult (expensive) due to cemented groups.
The Nikkor behaved very well also with the scratches on its front element. No real technical reason to do the re-coating, really, in particular since I use it with hood. But it's a rare lens, important to me and all that ....
I have a 50/2 Nikkor Tokyo. Is yours the 50/1.4?

I sent DAG a lens for modification. He told me 3 week turnaround, which is this week!

so, that's why you're using only 2 lenses for a year, so that you can all the rest to the spa!!!

Just heavily scratched, Raid. Since it's my only "fast" 50, I want it perfect![]()
Roland, I thought you had a pre-asph summilux 50? Am I mistaken or did you think it was redundant because of the 75?

I did everything I could including the phone call. The only good news is he still has the M5, but just got buzy and no time to fix it, so besides the passed 10 months still don't how long I should wait.
What else can I do?
Get it back and send to Sherry Krauter, or have DAG send it to Sherry directly, and I'm sure she will have it finished for you within three weeks of receipt. Or, continue waiting for what evidently will be an indefinite period of time.

Don has done some stuff for me very quickly, and some took a lot more time. I can say the same about every repair person I have used more than once. Whenever I have had Don on the phone it seems he is prepared to get grief - once we start talking and he gets that I am not going to bite his head off he is very pleasant and responsive.

I had only positive experiences with repair by DAG.

Ask him how much money/time/parts does he have into it. Decided if you want to send it to Sherry if you ask for it back. He might have started and run into parts or other problems he's trying to come up with an answer for.

Just finally spoke with him. Really nice and polite, told me my camera is 'coming up,' when asked what that meant he said it should be done by the end of the week. Can't wait to finally use my 3 new lenses.

Did he specify what week? Ha ha,
just kidding. If waiting is the only problem, it is worth the wait.

Let's hope Don doesn't have to implement something like the following - see items # 5 and # 6 on the "Order Agreement" here
Hah. Dumble is such a rip off. My pal is a highly respected amp tech/luthier and has made a few 'Dumble' knock offs, which are in fact Fender knock offs marked up 25x. $12000 for a tweed. are you kidding me

Oh, since then I've had to call him each week, as he keeps forgetting

I went through this sort of things w/ several different repair people. Wasn't happy w/ the way everyone is ready to do the work, then sits on it and doesn't answer emails once they get it. Seems to be the way it works for most of them, so since I think it's stupid to deal w/ people like that I no longer do. If it breaks it gets sold and I buy another. Usually works out cheaper that way anyway, and if I buy from KEH I get a 14 day no question asked return option, 60 days warranty, and if they need to repair it I get 6 mos warranty on their repairs. I also now primarily shoot MF folders and LF (except for my Leica R-5 which seems to be indestructible) and 90% of the time I can fix them if they break.
It's a policy that has saved me a lot of grief and honestly a lot of money. Why frustrate yourself w/ bad service, no matter what the quality once you finally get your gear, if you don't have to? And you don't.
As for Steve Choi, the last time I sent him a Welta to have the shutter repaired, once I finally got it back I fired the shutter about 5 times and one of the aperture blades came loose. His attitude was so crappy when I emailed him that I just sent the camera over to Mark Hansen in Portland who told me he regularly gets stuff sent to him that Steve has fouled up. Turns out that the aperture blade had been installed wrong from Steve's previous "repair". It was actually Choi that prompted me to adopt my "no send out to fix, just replace" policy.

I've thought about doing that same thing, as you never recoup the money of a CLA/Repair. The only reason I sent my m2 in for a repair is because I patched the curtain myself, which would affect resale value, and because the rangefinder repair is only costing $100 on a camera that only cost me $400. I'm not sure I'd get a m2 in similar working condition for $500. When it comes time to 'overhaul' it, as Don said it needs, I'll probably upgrade.

It's well known how Don works. If it does not fit your needs go elsewhere. I've never had anything but good dealings with him. I am willing to trade speed for quality and to me his prices are reasonable for what I get back.
I adopted a similar approach when I switched from an S2 to an S3, I bought new thinking that it would last well past my years. I’m not too sure on the replacement of everything as some item are just hard to come by. Others are understanding the idiosyncrasies a given camera. The angel you may be a lot better than the devil you don’t. But it’s an interesting approach.
