I've had my x100 for 9 months now and generally all is well except for 2 things: a couple of months after I bought it the VF curtain got stuck halfway down. I thought ok teething problems, thats what you get for buying one of the first cameras out of the factory. Fuji fixed it under warranty, was left without it for a month, no big deal.
But last month I took it to Greece on my holidays. A couple of weeks in and no probs, until one day after a long walk I open my bag to find the whole shutter button assembly completely separated from the camera! Springs and parts allover the place, and more loose parts inside the camera where the shutter button should be (forgot to take a photo, sorry). Bizarre! I mean I know I'm a bit heavyhanded with my cameras but never had a camera fall apart on me like that in over 20 years... Only thing I can think of is maybe the soft release might have something to do with it, but I've been put soft releases on all my cameras that accept one with no issues. From what I can see nothing looks broken or bent so who knows maybe it's an easy fix. Worst thing about was that I had no back up stupidly so I was left without a camera half the time on my holidays.
Anyway the cam is back to fuji's repair centre now, I'll let you know what happens. But now I'm seriously thinking I should probably sell the camera when it comes back, nice camera etc but its track record makes me nervous and the warranty is running out.
I think I might try an x10 as my take-everywhere shooter and decide which one to keep when the x100 comes back. The x10 looks usable enough for my needs and the long end of the lens could come handy sometimes. Anyone have both and care to share some thoughts?

Sorry to hear about this. I hope this is the last of your problems. You know, back in the day, we never had to worry about a back-up. Shame.

Yeah I have the same uneasy feeling as you - it's a nicely made camera, but I have.... slight reservations over it's mechanical durability. I've had 2, and the second one is currently with fujifilm for sticky aperture blade repairs.
I'll be damned if I go back to m4/3 though... I've been spoiled by the OVF and fujifilm sensor/processing.

Ouch that doesn't sound good, especially the no back up for your holiday part. I think there are always a batch of lemons in every production and the one you got was really sour. But I hope everything gets fixed just fine.
A friend of mine bought my x100 off from me and after 2 weeks of usage he had the sticky shutter syndrome, now I haven't heard of it before but he told me its a common problem for the camera. So you might want to check that too as a precaution.

Looking at some photos from the x100 right now, damn the sensor is really good....
fdigital yeah definitely not going to m4:3 after this, too spoiled. Hmmm

I'd recommend getting a Sony 5N and using rangefinder glass on it with the Hawk's Factory helicoid mount. Reasonably priced, has a fantastic sensor and works great.

Except that it's an arms length screen camera... The x100s OVF is like a revelation in comparison...

The battery retainer in my X100 broke in the first week I had it and had to be sent back to Fuji to be fixed. They refused to send my dealer a simple plastic part that just snaps into place. Oh well, I like the camera so much despite all the dumb design flaws like the lens hood and filter adapter that don't work with case, etc. I did buy the X10 and I love that too. They are great little cameras and I always have one or the other with me when I am out and about.

you know there is an EVF available that is the same as used in the Alpha 77 and 65 SLT?

True, but still electronic as opposed to optical.

yes I'm the same. I can take photos without a VF, with an EVF, with an attachable VF of some sort, no problems. But I just enjoy it more with a good old outdated old fashioned built-in viewfinder made of nice optical glass
Just my preference, not saying it's necessarily better for all.

The best camera is one that still works!
To me the camera never felt what you could call rugged at any stretch.
The X10 interests me!

I find it a little odd that a camera that by design is very portable would not be very durable.
I've had no issues with mine at all and I've had it since day one. Feels durable, works 100%, etc. I always wonder if one off issues that people say go wrong with a camera is completely the manufacturers fault or if neglect has something to do with it.

My impression is it feels as rugged as my Canonet G- III felt.

I was once warned by Sherry Krauter to NEVER use a soft release. She said that she saw more profound damage to shutter release mechanisms caused by bumping soft releases than by other causes.

such interesting info on soft release.
funny, i'd read so many reviews touting the 'solid' feel of the x100, and when i took mine out of the box i was so very disappointed. it kinda feels like a toy, even compared to my olly ep2, which is smaller, but so very much more solid. note tha i absolutely LOVE my x100. in terms of IQ, useability, low light/high iso performance, i think it surpasses my 5d with legacy zeiss glass. but 'build' quality is not a positive for me.

I don't think Fuji can fairly be blamed. After all you modded the camera with (let's face it) a completely unnecessary metal mushroom attached where it then broke.
Bad luck and commiserations and all that, but self-inflicted none the less.

Shutter problem
Shutter problem
I bought the X100 three weeks ago and was, initially, very much impressed with its performance - easy handling and wonderful images. A couple of days ago it had to be returned to Fuji for repair of a malfunctioning (sticky?) shutter. Maybe Fuji should have a general recall for a replacement of the shutter assembly since this is a very common problem with this camera.
