Hi all,

I am pretty new to the RF world and I just recently received a Canon 50/1.4 from ebay. The lens is in ok condition, however the focusing is pretty dry/rough and seems like the dampening is gone. So, I would like to know, is it bad for the lens if I keep using it or should I get a CLA for it? The focusing is not dry to the point where I can feel the grinding of metals, but it just doesnt feel lubed.

Thanks!

edit: Also, the aperture is pretty stiff imo, but it clicks alright, I assume a CLA will also fix that as well? But like above, will it damage the lens if I continue to use it without a CLA?

I would have the focus helicoid lubricated as soon as possible, its a 'multi-start' thread and one half will probably be made of brass - which is a fairly soft material and will wear quickly when dry.

I purchased a Canon LTM 50f1.4 and it seems loose. I have tried to tighten the screws but to no avail. It feels flimsy to me but pictures come out okay.
Any way to tighten it up?

These problems are common with the 50/1.4, and due to grease that dried over the years. To fix you have to relube the double helix.

1.) take the optical barrel off by removing the rear span ring
2.) remove the focus handle/ring (you'll see the screws)
3.) take off a brass span ring that you see then under-neath.

Now you can take the helix out, and relube with grease. Make sure to mark positions before you remove.

Pretty straight-forward with these lenses.

Roland.
