Hey all,
I usually pour my exhausted developer into labelled 2 liter plastic milk jugs because the chemistry can be disposed of properly even though the environmental impact of XTOL is fairly minimal. I was transferring the used chemistry into larger containers to minimize space used and I've noticed dark deposits at the bottom of the jugs, small particles that also float freely at the bottom of the chemistry. Has anyone encountered this before? What is this? If it's silver, am I doing something horribly wrong in my developing? How do I go about extracting this for proper disposal? My uni has the facilities to extract silver from fixer.

I found it interesting that the jugs which had depleted Ultrafin (regular, not Ultrafin Plus) didn't have these deposits

I used a gallon of XTOL two years ago. The results on film exposed at box speed was not as expected... thin negs. After the fact the solution turned a dark brown color with sediment. So in my infinite curiosity I watered a tomato plant with the expired XTOL and Ilford rapid fixer. This was the result...

Needless to say I did not eat the fruit from that plant. However a neighbor family was more than thrilled to reap those tomatos for a pork stew.

I kid you not... and their children are honor students !

Maybe we got it all wrong.
