Daughters

Along the Xiaozhuilu Trail, Taroko Gorge National Park, Hualien County, Taiwan. In April 2024, a 7.4 earthquake struck the Hualien area, trapping hundreds of people in the park. We were fortunate to have a safe and enjoyable time in Taroko.

ZORKIY 3M, INDUSTAR 61LD, film - Tasma 42l

My daughter. She is 5. We go on photo walks together and feed the swans. She has an instax mini camera and focuses solely on photographing cats and dogs.
Lovely. When my daughter was about 7 and my son 5, we gave them disposable cameras because we wanted to see what the world looked like to them. I developed and printed the films. It wasn't really a success: we got a lot of OOF shots of the dog, and of people's knees. We then went through a tunnel of smart phones and social media. But now that they are fledged and proper grown-up, my daughter has just bought her first film camera, and my son has expressed a fondness for mechanical gadgetry. So I feel the seeds were laid.

That's a great story. You did a good job :) I do think that what we do together with our kids has a profound impact on them. My parents were both painters. And my dad also loves photography. I feel blessed that he is still alive and that I can have discussions about art with him.
My daughter does not get film. And gets slightly upset when she can't see the results immediately. So on the photo walks I alternate between a Leica m6 and a Mint Instantikon RF-70 :)

I don't know whether you do darkroom stuff, but I've always felt the surest way to make a convert was to show them the magic of a print image appearing in the developer tray. Having said that, the reason my daughter wants to use film is that she likes the colours. I don't do colour processing.

I absolutely love doing darkroom stuff. And I did have a permanent one in our old apartment. But then we moved and had our 2 kids. No space right now. But in the future, absolutely. When they become a bit older :)

It's a funny business, being a parent. As teenagers they reject everything you showed them when they were younger. And then they realise that they actually like it a bit. Well, more than a bit. OK, they grudgingly accept there might be something in it.

Best of luck, enjoy the process!

Having raised no children all I can do is pass on some words from a relative who did, "By the time they are seven it is all over, when they reach fifteen they have stopped listening and if they reach twenty-one and are not in jail and still speaking to you, you did a good job." Pretty close to the mark.

My daughter does not mind being photographed with the Instax. But runs away if she sees me with the m6. Strange little girl.
Instax wide, Mint Instantikon RF70 scanned with the Polaroid app on iphone.
I actually have a flatbed scanner which would be so much better, but it's missing a cable. I think I've thrown it away sadly.
