David Alan Harvey is the Harvey Weinstein of photography

Hi John,

I'm glad to be out of the photo biz. With the current political environment, this thing will surly roll down hill, effecting many others.

Sally Mann comes immediately to mind. How about, all those parents who took innocent photos of their children playing tn a bath tub ?

I'm concerned for folks like KM-25.

Harvey is definitely a turd but, others who are completely innocent will suffer from his actions. History shows this to be a constant.

Thanks for your infos, comments and thoughts.
it's a difficult complicated world.

If your response to a discussion on predatory sexual abuse against women involves free speech, cancel culture, or victim blaming, please have a good look in the mirror.

How can we not consider our own community when discussing news like this? Helen is the only woman I know of who is an active member at RFF, and it's not like her involvement has always been smooth. RFF is almost entirely men. Think about what you can do to foster a broader and more inclusive community, and hold others in it to account. I am truly disgusted with some of the comments in this thread.

How do you hold mostly anonymous internet forum people to account though? Seems like that's always been the problem. The only power I feel like we have is starting arguments.

Snip
It was alleged that these images depicted underage girls and as such their existence constituted an act of child sexual abuse. In response, Magnum Photos promised that it would do a full review of its entire archive of photos. The results of that review were announced to be underway recently and Magnum seemed to clear itself of wrongdoing with regard to these or at least similar images thanks to a partnership and audit from The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF).

We are determined to learn from this and put better protections in place,” Magnum writes. “Whilst the images of children have been legally cleared by the Internet Watch Foundation, we are working hard to fully contextualise work, add appropriate warning information, and put the right levels of access restrictions in place.

Magnum’s announcement that it has been cleared of wrongdoing here was recently called into question. The organization should complete its review later this year.

These images aside, Harvey continued to battle allegations of misconduct. Magnum Photos suspended Harvey in October of 2020 for a “breach of bylaws” and was asked by the organization to engage in sensitivity and anti-harassment training “among other requirements.” The specific reason for Harvey’s suspension was never made public.

Shortly thereafter, a harrowing story published on the Columbia Journalism Review laid out multiple on-the-record cases of Harvey’s inappropriate behavior in striking detail. In response, Magnum opened another independent investigation into those allegations.

The results of that investigation had not yet been revealed, but it appears the situation has finally come to a head, as Harvey has announced that he is leaving Magnum Photos.

It should be noted that Magnum Photos has not specifically expelled Harvey, which it has never done to any member in its entire history. However, Magnum had concluded its independent investigation earlier this month and following that investigation, Magnum’s Board decided to permanently remove David Alan Harvey from the membership prior to a final vote on the decision by Magnum’s members. David Alan Harvey subsequently decided to resign.

Editor’s note: The original article stated that Harvey resigned prior to the conclusion of Magnum’s independent investigation, but a Magnum representative wrote to PetaPixel that this was not the case, and the reason for Harvey’s resignation was clarified. This has been reflected above.

PKR- It doesn't help to edit others work to move the argument here from Harvey's deplorable deeds and history to some political belief you want to push. All it does it show how little you think of everyone here's ability to deal with Harvey's behavior and what has been written about him.

He's not the only one. Let's say in certain other non western countries you will never hear of such things from those who have been abused, and nothing would be done to rectify it....and western men know how to take advantage of it.

Someone has posted what i was on about...I'll quote......

"3: Antoine d’Agata

Magnum photographer Antoine d’Agata is celebrated for his dehumanization of women. The more dehumanized the better. Apparently, it sells. Workshops. Prints. Books.

I found the following photos after searching the word ‘rape’ on the Magnum archive.

What is this? Male rape fantasies for the art buyer that can afford more than pornhub? What is it that the men in Magnum who voted d’Agata into the agency like about photos that dehumanize women and are tagged rape?

Antione d’Agata photos all tagged ‘rape’ ‘le viol’ on the Magnum archive. pic.twitter.com/vHaBc7wnW0

‘There is a strong undercurrent in Magnum culture that worships the male photographer who is into sex/drugs/sex-workers/bragging about conquests’. Dr. Alice Driver

In a 2012 filmed interview d’Agata says:

‘there is something in Cambodia that is very, very far from any morality. Let’s say it is in those extremes I’d like to continue my work. To see if there are still limits for me’.

Sleeping with sex workers is not far from morality. It’s the norm for more than a few foreigners who head to Cambodia. And drugged up artists are a ten a penny cliche.

If you mean the use of the "snip", It's a common copyright protection for the Publisher (Stephen) of this Forum. Common practice is, to post part of an article with a link to the full story, unless the author has given permission to republish the full piece.

In the case of legal documents and PR pieces pertaining to this matter, they're obviously for public consumption in full. PetaPixel is a publishing business.

In the case of my most recent post, the snip contained only new information not seen in previous posts, i.e. Magnum's not exercising full expulsion on Harvey.

If you think, I have some political agenda in this matter, say so, and state the nature of your gripe.

Except you're not "Snipping" you're editing the content to over emphasize points made within said articles for your own political use. Oh hey, you already have pointed out your own political point here. . .

It looks like, as per the piece below that, this is just the beginning of this campaign.

Magnum Photographers are the current targets as, they're high profile. This thing will likely spread given the recent CJR's success with Magnum.
...

Now I could add a few more "snips" here, but I think we all get the point. Do us all a favor, drop the trolling, and stop trying to move the subject here. It's boring, tedious and as already pointed out, all it does it show how little you think of everyone here's ability to deal with Harvey's behavior and what has been written about him.

So you think, the fallout from Harvey's actions have no place in this thread?

And, you speak for others on this topic ?

Any other edicts on the Harvey matter ? Lets hear them.

Give me a list of what's appropriate to post on the matter..

All posts provided links to the articles. Most would read from the links if they wanted more info.

Is there some agenda beyond your obvious distaste for my thinking?

I don’t get your point at all. Can you please explain clearly what you think PKR is doing and what his ‘political’ motivation is. I’m serious.

I suspect this is a very good time and place for any of the moderators to close this thread as it's become your own personal trolling spot.

"Harvey is definitely a turd but, others who are completely innocent will suffer from his actions. History shows this to be a constant." <----some one is obviously culture warrior-ring it here. It was boring when frank did it years ago, it's boring now.

End of story.

Ok.

People definitely are more concerned that I am creepy because I am a photographer recently, but I have no idea if it has anything to do with this specifically.

I also still don’t understand how this is ‘political’.

Marty

If anyone is trolling here and trying to make this political, it’s not PKR. PKR, please continue as I certainly am interested in not only the DAH fallout but how Magnum is dealing with it, and it’s backlog of images, as well.

Well John, If history proves accurate, the innocent people most likely to be harmed from the "fallout", will be the women who won't be hired by male photographers, and the photographers. Men are afraid of being falsely accused or, seen as not being PC. Putting in time as a photo assistant is almost a requirement for running a successful photo business. I worked for two. They were very different in their work. One was a NatGeo photographer who did nothing but location work, the other was a studio photographer. I learned to light working for one of Penn's former assistants. The process is important.

Things are so bad in SF that, men won't get into an elevator occupied by a single woman. It's not a good environment for mentoring women as, most of that's done by men. Harvey's actions put further pressure on some already strained relationships in the photo community.

This story isn't over.

hear hear I completely agree

pkr, thank you....

it's hard to take abhorrent behavior "out of context"...

is there any context that makes it acceptable?!?
