The only time I hear gear discussed is when one of my friends wants to borrow something from another. It's usually light stands or a flash head (most use same brand..handy). Otherwise it's all photography. During your period in the Mideast, I don't recall equipment coming up in our many email exchanges? It's simple, the interest is in the work not the tools.
Try your camera in the sink or bath tub maybe.
Genius! The sink it is.
Indeed my interest is in many things before it is in gear. That's not to be mistaken for me condemning folks who are into a gear. It's just not where my interest lays.
I do wish there was a section of this forum that was more focused on the making and distribution of images as there are members here that I enjoy maintaining contact with. I suppose it is what it is. Thanx for creating the Camerawork thread, in case I haven't thanked you already.

You know, Camera Work might be used for that? I've been posting lighting info, which is way OT for the thread. The lighting stuff will end soon. Or, maybe start a thread just for image production and promotion / circulation ? If you start one and it's bookmarked it should survive with 10 or so of us interested. You could cross post announcements on CW, or just use CW. It's fine by me.
Pm or email me, let me know what you want to do and what I might do to help.
On testing your camera. Make sure the water is still and clear so you can observe the camera under the surface. Watch for any stream of bubbles. A few may show at first, but should quickly stop. A steady stream means a leak .. pull the camera out at once. You might try it first without the battery. A unpowered electronic camera that gets wet is usually an easy fix. Once it's all dry inside it should be fine. If there is power, even if it's turned off, things can go badly. Please report back. pkr

.... What I have noticed though is that we never seem to discuss gear when we cross paths. The conversations, when photographic in nature, are almost always about ideas, aesthetics and so forth. No digital versus film. No prime versus zoom. No phone image printing size. If anything, how we show work or get it out to the audience seems the most important of discussions.
Anyhow, just an observation.

I don't know DAH well having only met him once at LOOK 3, when he asked me to drive down from Washington so we could meet, after we corresponded a few times in the wake on some comments I wrote on his BURN Magazine website. He looked at and commented on my book project several times, without the prospect of getting anything out of that: he likes to mentor people. From the exchange, it sounded like DAH was just trying to talk the person into attending the workshop. I thought dissing the person's work on Instagram was a petty.
KM-25 - Thanks for this and for the other posts you've made above, which further confirm DAH's generosity in mentoring people....David is a friend of mine and has been my most influential mentor. In fact, he is the most legitimate and hard working mentor I know and is widely regarded as the best mentor photography has...

Is it legal to use a 10 year old digital camera? I have an old one, but keep it hidden from the camera police.

In fear of the camera police? The camera police don't steal cameras, they just point and snicker.. and speak of megapixels under their breath..
Tape is no deterrent when it comes to the camera police. They are all knowing of makes and models and their acceptable use. Fines are levied on camera forums and done in the presence of camera gurus.
Best be careful of unauthorized image capture when using unapproved instruments! And, always clear your metadata ..

You've got the wrong end of the stick - stealing demonstrates valuing the item. Snickering is worse.
You can get insurance to buy a newer, higher megapixel camera if the old one is stolen. You cannot get insurance to undo a snicker.
I have high anxiety because while I have a camera with 20MP 1) it was a base model and 2) it isn't made any more plus 3) it isn't even Full Frame. Besides, often I use 15 year old (!) 6MP (!) cameras.
And to tie this ridiculous bit of attempted humor back to the original topic:
My newest, best camera cost (new) 1/10 of the price of the training that started this thread. I wouldn't dream of spending (in one hit) the amounts talked about for training on a camera, I'd barely consider that if I wanted an entire studio setup.
I want to be a better photographer. And I would buy any decent camera of the last 10 years (if I needed to) and spend the remainder on the training. I don't care who, just what. and get out and try to see.
For those who've asked about using this forum for seeing - look at and post to the gallery. Look to see who you like and who gives feedback that is helpful. Try to work out what you want to do.
Sadly, this all takes time!

Well, with the exception of Ansel Adams, Elliott Porter, and Eddy Adams, the current workshop craze is a new thing, spawned by the digital photo tsunami. If you have a good portfolio, the workshops offered by the well known photographers may be worth the money for the networking that can be done in a week. As for motivation and critiques, I get those from creditors, friends and clients. To quote Stan Freberg: "Everyones' an art director".

The good part of capitalism, it gives you choices for your money. You could not only have 1/10 camera, but get on training for another 1/10. I admire John Free as mentor and as very generous person. Most of mentoring I received from him is on his you-tube free videos and on his FB page.

There is no controversy. We all know anyone who "sees" would have made the shot on an iPhone (preferably iPhone 4, although iPhone 7 is also accepted) on their way to an Amazon workshop on distribution. At just $3,399 it is a true bargain.More iPhone controversy .. now iPhones are being used as photo lighting tools by photographers with REAL cameras..the horror.. Do I still have to take the workshop if I was already using iphone flash way before? Ah, it probably doesn't count since it was my film that way 10 years old and the camera was 30...
Anyway, my problem with paying for expensive workshops is that I don't believe that I can be taught to "see" (even if I wanted somebody to teach me HOW to "see").

I almost never post anything other than images on here but feel compelled to post on this thread for some reason...
From a personal perspective I think the latest generation of smartphones have really crossed over into being "proper" cameras and are a very viable alternative now. I would also say that for street type work where being low profile is important and being spotted will change the type of photo you get a phone is often an actively better tool than any camera. That shouldn't be a controversial position IMHO.
