Day 1 With an M4-P

After some 'internal dialogue' and helpful advice from members of this forum with regard to which M4 to go for - I have purchased an M4-P! And ordered a ZM Biogon 35 2.8 to go with it. Yay!

Possibly because the M4 is assumed to be the proper "4". In opinion polls the M4-2, even more than the M4-P, gets the short end of the stick. Lately, I wonder if the M4-2 is that bad...

I re read a little of the Walter Kluck Midland M4-2/p story having put my first roll through the M4-p. He/Midland not only saved Wetzlar, but in the M4-p they made a camera which is the equal of the German products IMO. OK so I experienced the RF flare for the first time, but it's not problematic and seemed more connected with where I positioned my right hand on the lens. My previous soul searching about which M4 to go for is glady let go of, and immediately using the camera was a joy. And with a test film it seemed on the money exposure-wise. It's a good looking user, so I have no qualms about taking it out and working with it. I now can't wait for the ZM lens, which looks as if it might be delayed by several weeks, though I've got my summicron-c 40mm to play with in the meantime. Whether its perverse or not, I'm so glad I didn't go for the M8 now.

In terms of other lenses - I think the 35 is the length I use most often and feel most comfortable with. I have a couple of LTM 50mm lenses - a collapsible summitar and the Jupiter 3 f2, but that's it. I take mostly people pictures so I'm tempted by the 75 or 90 length. I would have to go for the budget end of the spectrum and am wondering about either the Color Heliar 75 1.8 or the Apo Lanthar from CV. But if one of the great beauties of the M cameras is their compactness and portability I wonder if a hefty long lens is going to remain in the bag more than ever it gets used. Do others find the same is true? I used to love using my Nikkor 105 with my F2, but its so nice to forget the camera in the hands and concentrate on the evolving image - a process the M4-P seems to lend itself to.

Color Heliar isn't a 1.8 thats just wishful thinking. 2.5 more like.

The Heliar 75 f2.5 is beautiful - compact and light in use, and very small "in the bag." I use a black one on a M4-P and a chrome on an MP. The APO Lanthars are super good - I have the S-mount on an S3, but for the money you can wait for an Elmar-C 90/4 or M-Rokkor 90/4. The Elmars are less dear and take 39mm filters.

The Heliar f2.5 or the Elmar 90 are both little larger than a Summicron 50. See other threads for posted pix from the 75/2.5. Good luck and above all, enjoy.
