dead meter stalk removal?

If one were to come across a CL where the meter is cooked, and one wanted to use collapsible lenses with it, could one remove the meter stalk entirely? If so, would it be something that could be done in a DIY fashion, or would it have to be sent off?

People have reported Sherry Krauter performing this surgery. I expect anyone familiar with the CL could handle it.

Sherry would do a very neat job. I suspect a pair of sheet metal cutters could do the same thing, albeit less cleanly.
