New York December meet up, which day will it be?

J-M,

At work (a nuclear accelerator lab) I have a "pan cake" survey meter and measure only a few counts/ticks above background.

Understand that I now get about twice the background radiation in Madhattan than when I lived in Brooklyn or Queens because sand has a signifigantly lower background than the granite and Radon gas associated with granite outcroppings. I say using my 35/1.8 Nikkor is no more hazardous than sun bathing ontop of a granite rock in Central Park.

Looked upon in another way shooting my 35/1.8 is likely a lower dose of radiation than say eating half a dozen bananas. Realize that bananas have a low level of radiation due to a low level of natural occurring isotope of Potasium. I would say my Nikkor gives off a lot less radiation than say a Brazil nut which actually has a surprising high level of radioactivity.

BTW only 1500 35/1.8's were made in LTM and it is a very special lens on the Monochrom. I'm so glad that I have one.

Back when I worked on the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis, I was a meteorologist (Aerographer's Mate) and was outside doing weather observations all the time.

At the same time, I was also a firefighter on the at sea fire party (Flying Squad, hoorah!) and we all had dosimeters we had to wear since we occasionally worked in and adjacent to reactor spaces.

We would have bi-weekly dosimeter readings and mine would always come up several times higher than the levels that the reactor workers were receiving. This is because I had access to the sun and also probably from a little "bleeding" of the twenty or so electromagnetic systems atop the boat where I worked.

On another note, does anyone want to get together for lunch or dinner sometime between the 20th and New Year's Eve? Maybe Pho Bang?
We're totally off topic on another thread recommending places for an RFF member to see and things to eat/drink while they are in town. I mentioned Pho Bang and now I have a hankering for good Vietnamese food. We just don't have it here in New Mexico!

Jean-Marc,

A funny story is last month NYPD detected some radiation levels above background from one of their helicopters, and they sent in team bad-A$$. The black suburbans and men with machine guns stormed a famous cancer hospital in Madhattan looking for a dirty bomb. LOL.

I'm down. JMQ has brought us there as well and it's damn yummy.

Phil,

I love Vietnamese food. Jean-Marc took us to a great place. The problem being a skinny guy is that I'm hungry almost all the time.

I miss the green chile and massive breakfast burritos I use to get on Trinity Drive in Los Alamos.

Let's go.

I went to a place called Tecolote cafe on Cerrillos Rd, and the breakfast burrito w/ salsa verde and pesole is insane!!!

now back to NYC -- I'm game to go to Pho Bang anytime. The owners know my parents when they were all in Saigon in the 1960s.

Cal, I'll bring you a jar of New Mexican chile verde when I head back.

Jean-Marc, your recommendation of Pho Bang a few years ago got me going there and I haven't been to another Vietnamese place in the city since. Thanks!

Phil Forrest

And if we go to Pho Bang for dinner, they are pretty good about letting us bring our own wine.

I'd love to bring in a couple bottles of 33 Export or Saigon beer. For some reason, it's a perfect balance with spicy food.

Phil Forrest

I think they have beer (need to confirm), so it's kind of uncool to bring your own beer. Yes, beer works very well with Vietnamese food, and Rose works surprisingly well.

Phil,

Thanks in advance for the green chile.

I have many great memories when I kinda did a modern day escape and lived in the Santa Fe National Forest in a two bedroom log cabin 47 miles from civilization, in an area so remote I got no TV reception. Mailbox was a quarter mile down the road on highway 4. A natural hot springs was about 2 miles from my cabin.

Christmas in Santa Fe is kinda special, especially on Canyon Road.

I've never brought alcohol in, I thought they were kind of BYO as I'd seen a group bring in a six-pack of bottles a few months ago.

Hey Gang -
I've only been to the NYC meetup once and really had a great time. Going to try and make it again for this next one. Will you all be meeting at Pho Bang or at Puck Fair?

Looking forward to it!

The meetup is at Puck Fair.

Since I'll not be in town until later in December, I pitched a lunch or dinner at Pho Bang to the group but we haven't confirmed a date.

Phil Forrest

The date range works for me too. How about a Sunday lunch? easier for me to find parking in Soho.
