For those lurking Steve has lived as an ex-pat.



Kinda funny how I had become so obsessed with shooting New York. I realize my behavior was to have a sense of home to take with me when I leave/retire. Pretty much took about a decade to figure out the motivation.



So I have a sense of closure and decided that I will utilize the IBIS in the SL2 to help me shoot NYC at night for a new body of work.



With "Maggie" I got lazy exploiting the automation of the SL, but with this new NYC at night shooting I will be pretty much reconfiguring the SL2 function as a more manual camera that will be very much emulating a rangefinger rather than a DSLR.



I have been waiting over 3 years for a SL2.

I think I did a good job as for Xmas am back on the Mediterranean and despite taking all the gear haven't been too inspired. "Many things look the same, this/that isn't here anymore" Thought to shoot BW with the Fuji 6x9 and have good negs to print during winter.

Did you see the Willets point tinype feature in NY times? The sense of documenting a fleeting area that will be bulldozed due to genteification reminded me about your work.

Quite a stunt to do wetplate on the field as they did, but remarkable piece afterwards.
I was thinking of DM'ing this piece to some NYC film shooting "hypebois". Much better to document than shoot random New topographics minimalism of hipster walls...

Bike and shoot is my favorite way of going around. IS in digital is a blessing and I assume you're not tripoding around, and using the "light vacuuming" Noct Nikkor.

The Noct-Nikkor on the SL2 I tried at the SL2 Launch. They modded the firmware so the movable focus patch does not reset. When using MF lenses if you depress the joystick you get a zoom in to make focus easy. This is a great advance forward for me.

Pretty much it functions like a rangefinder, but the RF patch is movable. By not resetting this allows for bracketing focus. This should be a great rig. I learned on my visit to Basel that the F1.2 Noctilux is not as sharp as the Noct-Nikkor. Both lenses feature hand ground ASPH lenses.

Currently there is a state of overbuilding of luxury housing, while there remains a shortage of affordable or modest housing in NYC. Pretty much the market is very near the top or might have just peaked. The tear down and building still continues in the meantime, but my feeling that things will slow down and some form of "regression to the mean" might happen in NYC.

At this point I'm thinking of embracing color printing with digital. This will be very refreshing for me because I consider myself a B&W printer.

Right now Amsterdam and Rotterdam look like cities I want to live in for a while. There is the possibility of also living in a city for 90 days and moving to another country to avoid taxes. Could be interesting for a while, but I can see that one day I might want to stop moving around. Oh-well, meanwhile lots of traveling and photography as everyday life.

I realize that Leica has a Christmas shutdown so it is unlikely that a SL2 will be coming my way this year.

I'm on two waiting lists. My spin on the SL2 is that is a big advance over my SL as far as speed, ergonomics, and resolution. I can see the advance in resolution on my EIZO when I download, but I don't know if this is due to pixel count or IBIS. Perhaps a bit of both.

IBIS opens up a new body of work shooting NYC at night.

BTW the SL is still a great camera. I'll probably dedicate the SL for APO 35 Cron use and reserve the SL2 for the 50 Lux.

The SL2 does not reset and center the focus patch when MF lenses are used. This is a big deal because this allows multple shots to be taken where it is easy to just toggle the zoom for critical focus.

Many think of the SL and SL2 as being like a DSLR, and surely with all the automation they can be set-up that way, but an alternative is to configure the camera as if a rangefinder with a movable focus patch that allows a zoom in for critical focusing with manual focus lenses.

I disconnect the AF from the shutter release, and use the toggle to zoom/magnify. With AF lenses the AF is engaged on the toggle; with MF lenses the magnification increases. When used with manual exposure the experience is very much rangefinder like.

I can see using my Noct-Nikkor a lot more and the 50 Lux "E60." For me the SL2 will be mostly used with my fifties.

Also will be really great to have a two rigged camera kit: one with a wide; and a second with a normal.

A Marketing Director who lent me a 28-90 zoom for NYC Fashion Week about 3 years ago knows of her. I suspect that she is the person responsible for the following.
