Can anybody recommend a shutter release cable that is well made and machined with properly tapered and cut threads? I'm tired of the cheap crap being sold on the accessory market, I've tried two so far and both were junk, with cheap flaking chrome on the threaded end, and improperly tapered (too sharp a taper) threads to fit properly without loosening up and wiggling after a few shots. Surely you guys aren't all using these crappy things I have, so if you have a good one where did you get it?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I have an old Prontor cable release, made by the German shutter manufacturer (Prontor makes shutters for large format cameras and they made the shutters in the Hasselblad CF series lenses). I got it for $5 at a photo swap meet when I was 15 yrs old! It was in a Vivitar package and the seller didn't know what it was. I didn't either, i was just a kid. Later found out Prontor cable releases are very expensive. Well worth whatever they normally cost; mine was used and has performed flawlessly for 18 years now. I wouldn't give it up for anything!

Somehow similar to Chris, I got mine when I was 16 and into microscope photography. From Olympus back then and not expensive (I wouldn't have been able to afford more than, say DM 20
). Cann't find it on-line, but it looks similar to this GEPE one:

Except all chrome. Very sturdy, and I love the disk lock.

Well-known
I use a Nikon AR-7 which is a double cable release for macro use. It is really smooth compared to a couple of other (single) ones that I have. I will get an AR-3 next time I can, for ordinary camera use.

These, made by 'Image Resources' are practically indestructible, and come in various lengths. I've used these for years and never had a failure. Bonus is the cloth doesn't turn the cable release into a 'stick release' in cold weather like a vinyl covered one does.

The best camera is one that still works!
I thought I would drag this thread back for two reasons!
One, I just got a very well made 12" cable release that you can tie a knot in with no effect at all on the action for $22.00 US ... it also has a lock with button release for timed exposures.
Two, it's German made and came from the much maligned 'Camera Hunter' eBay seller in the US ... was here in a week and his servce was impecable!

I've never heard of CAMERA HUNTER on ebay. Why do people malign him?

I've never heard of CAMERA HUNTER on ebay. Why do people malign him?
There have previously been a couple of threads here from memory regarding his service ... people who ordered stuff and never got it ... emails ignored etc!
He sells a lot of camera accessories like lens caps, hoods straps etc. This is my third time dealing with him and to be honest there has been no problems at all and I'm very impressed with this release considering the price.
It's funny ... just after this thread was started a few weeks ago I went to use my cable release and it promptly broke which sent me off on an eBay search for a replacement. I looked locally but I'm buggered if I'm paying $50.00 plus for a 12" cable release of dubious quality, which is what the camera stores here were asking!
Actually I just checked and it wasn't $22.00 ... it was $16.99 and seven bucks post!
