@experts: if one is using a Nikon Hood ‹HS-5› OR more precisely ‹HS‐5› [1] —— instead of the correct ‹HS-2› (read: ‹HS‐2›) —— on their NIKKOR-H·C Auto 1:2 f=50mm, does this undermine their ‹street cred›?

😉

[1] Again, typography! I've discovered that certain Nikonistas use a special hyphen for the Nikon Hoods that merely looks like a simple «-», but it is NOT 😱

I have two 50mm 2.0 Nikkors for SLR cameras. One is a Nikkor S from 1963 and I have a hood marked Nikkor 5 cm 2.0. The other is a Nikkor-H from 1972 and I have a HS-2 hood for it. When I'm actually using the lenses, it's a ten dollar metal hood that screws in and don't have to worry about popping off if it gets bumped.

Well, I'm trying to solve the mystery of «street credibility» in a light-hearted manner

LOL I obviously don't have that, whatever it is!

I once left a Nikon 80-200 lens on a bridge railing in Chicago and a couple hours went by before I realized I'd left it... And it was still there when I got back! That lens probably has more street credibility than any other lens I know.

"what's wrong with "generic screw in vented hoods from china/ebay"?"

I think that spells photographer. Having to put the "correct" hood on a camera probably spells poser.

Really. The person who knows the specifics of Nikon's lens hood models over the last 40 years, and would then pass judgement on someone for having the "wrong" hood has no street cred to give or take.

I was going to say:

"I wouldn't know 'Street Cred' if I fell over it."

But I've just realised that the ability to take normal photos on the street while there's kids within 300 yards without you receiving dirty, suspicious looks or being arrested is probably the height of "Street Cred".

Wait.....the lens designer specifies a hood shape that will best optimize the results with the lens in question, but if you make the effort to get the correct hood you’re a “poser”, but if you don’t care, and stick any dang thing on there, you’re.......a better person, somehow? Weird.
