There should be a firm requirement that ads be removed when the item is sold, or withdrawn from sale. There are some 2000 classified but i'd be surprised if more than half were still active, or available.
Why don't the site managers delete ALL the ads after a 30 day period, as a default, and if the item is still available, then the seller would have to re-enter it. So it takes a few minutes to do that, but it is far more considerate of the viewers than having to ask, and getting messages back that no, it sold last year!
While i am at it, i object to the 'hyping' of ads that occures quite frequently here, by many of the same people, you know who you are!
It is neither helpful, or constructive. If you have something informative about the item, then, by all means, add your information; but messages like WOW, what a deal- I wish i had money!! are pointless, and a waste of time and space.

I agree with Mark too, though I think it would be useful if there were a better system for marking items as 'sold'.

As to the "hyping" thing, I found it rather strange when I first looked at RFF but to be honest is it that big a deal? It seems fairly harmless and to my mind it is more a reflection of the friendliness of this forum than anything else.

Yes, Joe, the matter has come up before, but nothing was done. Somebody is paying for the space and the transactional traffic on the site.
I agree that this is an amicable site, by and large; but as it gets bigger and more and more people use it purely to sell 'gear', it will be more difficult to manage and keep it at some sort of 'reasonable' level.
Some rules should be invoked on these processes.
