Got an announcement from PopFlash that mid October is the expected first delivery date for the M8. I had better start scrimping and saving ASAP.

And are they referring to it as "Digital M", "M8" or something else?

lookin forward to the first reviews! Not gonna touch the M8 with a 10' pole until the reviewers give it a seal of approval first..

Has anyone seen a picture of it yet?

When I checked back with a major UK dealer recently I was told hopefully mid October ..... BUT and this is a very big but..... they have so many pre-orders that unless Leica will have a large inventory ready to ship a lot of people are going to be disappointed. I believe the pre-orders are real and not placed with multiple dealers since the deposit required is substantial.

Josh at PopFlash is calling it the "M8". I have a deposit put down there so hopefully the date is as close to being firm as Leica ever is. Remember the DMR? Wish i'd have it in time for a trip to Honduras 10/1 - 10/8 but that ain't gonna happen. Steve

I'm in the same situation with a deposit placed and a trip on 10/1 to CA. That's to attend a function where for some parts a discreet camera is mandatory. At the moment I have an R-D1 which I'm hoping will be quiet enough. I'll be very lucky indeed if I receive the M digital in time, let alone get used to it.
Dealers got very badly burnt over the DMR with people demanding that their deposits be returned. This time mine is being very cautious with the orders.

That's my experience too, dealers are happy to put you on the list and will take a deposit only when there's a product to sell. Realistically, it's going to be a few weeks and I feel sure Leica will want to gauge initial reaction at Photokina.

You early adopters are brave guys! Alhtough I am sure it will be a quality product I think I'll wait for a few reviews (perhaps from you guys) before I take the plunge.

Not really a case of being brave, more about wanting to be involved with Leica's most significant camera since the M3. We can be certain the camera is going to be a winner - Leica's future as an independent camera manufacturer depends on it - and even if there's a few firmware glitches, that's fine. Ever used Windows?
I have two on order because I am presuming we will still have to choose a finder magnification but this is one area of the camera we know very little about.

The early adopters are indeed brave. I have had 2 new M7s go back for annoying battery drain problems, DX code problems and exposure compensating light problems. And these are fairly straightforward electrical concepts that have been around since the 70s. I expect the first year of production to completely halt while their techs deal with the bugs in the first wave of units. For me a digital M goes against evrything the M is valued for: mechanical reliablity.
I'll probably buy one though.

I'm bound by a ND agreement to not discuss specifics of the impending digital M camera...however I (think) I can say that it is the BEST prototype I have ever seen from Leica.
It look, felt and smelt like a Leica!
It all worked, it was fast as heck, and the images were such that I still have the bruises from when the German product manager wrestled it from my hands to take back to Solms.
All I can say is, save your pennies!
FWIW, I have not yet started taking deposits yet and cautious dealers should probably wait for an official due day before doing so!
ciao,
Rich

That's good to hear. Every guarded comment I've read about the M8 has been entirely positive. Cannot wait!

A La Carte my M8
A La Carte my M8
As for me, I am saving up for an M3.
Maybe if Leica does an M8 a la carte and I can customize some of the internal equipment, then I'll pull that trigger.

A big big thank you for those comments Rich. It reminds me of when my wife was going through a long surgery (3hrs) and the surgeon came out mid way to reassure me that all was going fine...it meant a lotbressoniac said:...however I (think) I can say that it is the BEST prototype I have ever seen from Leica.
