Developing C41 film in B&W Chemicals

I have some out-of-date film which I want to use to troubleshoot a light-leak.

I don't want to pay to have it developed, I was wondering whether it would be at all possible to develop the film in B&W chemicals - just to the state where and light leaks would be noticeable. I wouldn't care about the image itself...


PS I'm sure I remember a thread on these lines a while back, but I'm buggered if I can find it.

Yea I started a thread.

Get some universal developer. Make it a little too concentrated, develop it for longer than you need.

The negs will appear blank, but hold them to a light and you'll see the image.

Someone on Photo-net gave me this formula. A lot of "found films" in that Photo-net thread were processed this way. I have not tried it yet.

Kodacolor in Acutol for B&W negatives

10 minutes in Acutol 1:10 - 20c. Water stop bath, alkaline fixer (Photographers Formulary,) wash in running water for a few minutes. Photo-flo and hang in the bathroom.

If you try it please let us know what happens.

I've been using Rodinal to develop Agfa color negative film. Better results than Acutol and d76 in my experience. Look in my gallery to see some results.

What are your times and temperatures?

1:50, 12', somewhere around 30 C...

Thanks for the information. Rodinal is a lot easier to obtain than Acutol.

30 C. is a little warm for developinbg isn't it? In Fahrenheit that would be 86 degrees.

Got less grain with higher temperature, after all c41 uses higher temperatures too. Scanning must take account of grain. My experience is limited to less than 10 outdated cheap rolls with Acutol, D76 and Rodinal. Last time I decided to emulate c41 temperatures, the results were noticeably better. Let me know about your experience.
