Developing Neopan 1600 in DD-X Shot at EI 800

To my eyes the first two pics have medium-high contrast and much better clarity. Good impression of sharpness as well.

The difference is all due to the Curves applied in Photoshop, and some dodging and burning - for better or for worse in these days of scanning film and post processing, the INHERENT differences between different film/developer combinations have become almost irrelevant.

Of course, if you do everything the traditional way in a wet process then it's a different story.

Assuming the original scan captured the info present on a well-exposed, well-processed negative, then "the look" could probably be made to look like any film/developer combo you want in Photoshop.

Hi,

@ SleepyHead, actually, I like your first shot. The contrast is good too. But different than mine. The second picture seems to be missing texture some place in the dresses. I don't suppose such young kids have much texture in the face yet!!! 🙂

I'm going more for the higher contrast look. I really the high contrast images. But only, if the grain is under control and the tonality is still there.

@ Roger, thanks for saying so. We need guidance from people like you here. I donated to your site about 2 days ago.

Tonight, it looks like a roll of PX125 is to be developed!! But, I'm getting to Neopan as soon as possible.

Best, JP

Thank'ee kindly, good sir.

I agree that contrast is very much a question of taste and subject matter. Your pics work better at your preferred contrast, and sleepyhead's work best at his. Well, his higher-contrast ones, anyway: I was nothing like as keen on the lower-contrast ones, but then, I often fond that no matter how good a lower-contrast shot is, it looks weak and feeble when juxtaposed with punchier pics.

Cheers,

R.
