Developing "Short"

Hi,

I understand that a film such as HP5 developed short is supposed to lose detail in the blacks but still have contrast. Just out of curiosity, would that be the same if I shot at 800 ISO and develop for 400?

Overexposure = more shadow detail.

Underexposure = less shadow detail.

Overdevelopment = more shadow detail (hence "pushing"), more contrast.

Underdevelopment = less shadow detail, less contrast.

I'm not entirely clear what your question is.

If you developed "short" or for less time than normal you would be pulling the film.

If you pull development you have to overexpose also to end up with a usable image.

The only reason to reduce developing time is to reduce contrast, a useful technique for shooting in harsh sunlight and other high-contrast lighting. For most films, start by reducing the developing time 25% and give one stop more exposure.
