Developing woes

This was shot using Arista400 exposed at 200 and developed in HC110 dil. B for 6.75 minutes, as recommended. Anyone ever see anything like it?

I make up my batch from concentrate: 9ml of syrup and 291ml of distilled water. My stop bath and fixer are premixed using tap water which, in this part of TX, is very soft and contains a fair amount of minerals.

Any ideas, tips, suggestions appreciated.

Was hoping for more than humor but humor is always nice. 🙂 No, no shaking, just the usual inversions for 5 sec every 30 sec.

I agree, about it looking like bubbles in the developer. Did you use enough volume to totally cover the reels?

If its a two reel tank, did you put an empty reel in to prevent the reel from moving up on the spool?

Try tapping the tank on the counter after the inversions are done, might help with dislodging bubbles.

Are you using distilled water?

Distilled water in the developer but not the stop bath and fixer.

300 ml of developer just covers one reel. I don't normally put the extra reel in unless I'm doing two; there's a little plastic 'snap ring' to keep the reel in place. I usually give the tank a rap on the bottom with the heel of my hand after each inversion cycle.

I've never seen this from using one reel in a two reel tank with 300ml of developer...I do use the clip thingie and that seems to help...I also slap the bottom of the tank whenever I invert the tank during agitation...to dislodge any bubbles...
Could there be any Photo-Flo contamination...I mix my Photo-Flo in the developing tank and place the film still on the reels in the tank...when done I clean/rinse in hot water and I also use a hand brush on the reels...
I don't remember seeing this on film I've developed...

I tend to agree with foaming theory. But another problem may the foaming when pouring the developer into tank. Dilution B is very active so initial foaming may have occured right at first leaving it's scar. You could try dilution H to see if that helps. Also, if you have used photoflo and not completely removed after last use, it may encourage foaming.

Hey Bud are you sure it wasn't one of your multiple exposures. remember shooting this guy. 😀 All kidding aside have never seen this but I don't have the experience that all these guys have . It does look like something foamy though.😕

Not using Photo-Flo, something called LegacyPro hypo wash. I put a few drops in the final rinse. I usually rinse all parts of the tank, reels, lid, etc. in warm water and air dry. Thanks for the tips.

The last guy in this thread is using dilution H and seems to be having great success with it. I'm gonna have to give it a try, it appears. Or, at least something a little less 'hot' than dilution B. Thanks for the advice.

Have to agree on the foaming issue. When I take the lid off to pour the developer out, it's quite foamy. I'm gonna have to try something between B and H to see if that knocks the foam down. Probably also make my syrup go further, huh? BTW, I've ordered some more stuff to start over with distilled water all the way.

Kenny I use H as you know and it fills my dbl tank. and I give it two hard raps on the counter top almost every time I do the inversions not really needed just got in the habit.
