New York Diane Arbus at the Park Avenue Armory

Robert,

Thank you so much for that link. Very-very informative.

BTW in art school pretty much I “straight printed” meaning no burning or dodging. We were trained to make good negatives that could be straight printed on a number 2 contrast grade paper.

I wonder how long it would take to get back my darkroom chops?

Also my “Slacker’s Brew” (Diafine) is a two part compensating developer.

BTW I knew nothing of Diane’s darkroom technics.

I have been to Westbeth Artist Community, the former Bell Labs research facility.

Diane Arbus was a resident there.

A very interesting place of both scientific and artistic creativity. Our friend told us of how it was part of the “Manhattan Project.”

I am known for shooting close with a wide. I kinda violate other people’s space.

When I shoot a Leica rangefinder is usually is a 28 mm. Kinda a la Garry Winnogran.

Stopped down to F5.6 and with the focus set at 2 meters I basically utilize a “kill-zone” technic that allows point and shoot.

Devil Christian once mentioned how I shoot as being performative, and somehow I draw out the “crazies of New York.”

It does seem like I have a talent to draw out either the best or worse in people.

My response to Christian is, “It takes one to know one,” meaning crazy.

Someone who knows Joel Meyerwitz as a neighbor in Brooklyn commented that I reminded him of Joel Meyerwitz at the B&H used department where a crowd of strangers were assembled in a micro meet-up fasahion.

Then I got compared to Luis Mendez, who is a friend. While Luis haunts B&H on the outside and is a bit of a tourist attraction, I kinda do the same inside B&H.

I have also been compared to Garry Winnogran because I shot so much with a disregard for printing creating a mess that could take a lifetime to sort out.

Out of all these photographers though I personally identify most with what I’m learning about Diane Arbus.

Well, I finally found the answer to something I'd wondered about for years. The flash Arbus used was a "Mighty Light". I'd never seen a flash like it before.

I'll come to this one! I just got back from Europe, and I'll be away next week, so the timing is perfect. It's been awhile since we had regular meetups...

Btw. swing lens panorama camera's like the Widelux don't have shutters.

SHORT ANSWER: DIANE ARBUS MEET-UP SATURDAY JULY 19th AT 1:00 PM.

I used my theater voice, sorry for the “shouting.”

On a side note bring out your cameras that shoot the square.

I think my affinity for Diane Arbus is because of her class she was an outsider. I grew up on the opposite end of the SES, and because of the time and era I grew up in I did not fit in and had the feeling of being an outsider.

I have learned that we both favored compensating developers.

I too also had problems with depression.

Joe,

Good thing you asked.

There is a telephone number to order: 212-933-5812. M-F 10-6.

I ordered online and they will hold my ticket at the box office. $25.00 plus a $5.00 fee.

I did the 1:00 PM slot.

Unclear if you can pay at the door. Also they mention limited hours which also are not given.

A New York last minute Hurry up.

The Trailer was weird. The printing was done by the only person authorized officially.

Again the trailer was weird.

I opted to have the ticket e-delivered.
It's like someone just invented the internet...
Took a while for the ticket to show up in my in box.
Joe

If anyone has not purchased tickets, dont. I have a single ticket available for whoever wants it.
Have free tickets for myself and a guest waiting at the box office. Who wants to be my guest ?
😛
