I'm in the first category -- I use a diaper bag as a camera bag when traveling. I believe it minimizes theft risk. Equally important, there are some very well contructed bags which are far less expensive than camera bags.

I actually use my cameras when I travel, so everyone knows what's in the bag anyway.

A soft-sided picnic cooler works as my "leave-in-the-car" camera bag.

Apparently, old PBJ sandwiches have no more appeal than dirty diapers.

Insulated lunch bags, even those in Leica green, are low on the status tree as well. Perhaps not quite as low.
