"Blame Photoshop, Not Diabetes, for This Amputation By PATRICK McGEEHAN

Published: January 24, 2012

New York City’s health watchdogs warn that drinking too much sugary soda could cost you a leg. But you also might lose a limb if you appear in one of their ads.

A blunt new poster from the Bloomberg administration shows an overweight man on a stool, his right leg missing below the knee. A pair of crutches leans against a wall beside him. The advertisement, being placed throughout the subway system, warns that ever-growing portions of fast food and sodas could cause diabetes, which could lead to amputations.
But it turns out that the person shown in the advertisement did not need crutches because his legs were intact. The health department confirmed on Tuesday that its advertising agency had removed the lower half of the man’s leg from the picture to make its point: the headline over the image reads “Portions have grown. So has Type 2 diabetes, which can lead to amputations.”"

"Imagine His Shock. His Leg Had Vanished.

"Having played a singing elephant on stages across the country, Cleo Berry is well acquainted with the vagaries of show business. But he still was stunned to learn that he had unwittingly become an amputee in advertisements that New York City is posting to warn of the dangers of diabetes.

Cleo Berry on Sunday in Los Angeles. He said he was worried about the effect an ad in the New York subway might have on his acting career.

A poster being used in the city's campaign against diabetes.

Mr. Berry was a struggling young actor several years ago when he accepted $500 to pose for some photographs in a Manhattan studio, he recalled in a telephone interview from his home in Los Angeles on Saturday. He had not given those pictures much thought until Friday night, when a friend alerted him that his image — minus one leg — was all over the Internet."

That's why signing a model release is a bigger deal than people think. Reminds me of the billboard where some little girl was made out to be an underprivileged orphan. Her mother saw it and freaked out. Bet she wasn't so upset when someone handed her a check for having her kid pose and signed a release.

This guy has got plenty of attention this week. It should help his modeling and acting career.

Still, the city of New York shouldn't have had to look terribly far and wide to find an actual amputee to model for the marketing campaign.
There's actually a Vietnam Vet, a double amputee, who sells disposable cigarette lighters in midtown who would have been perfect for the image required (anyone seen this guy lately? I don't commute anymore). He used to sit in his wheelchair in shorts in all weather with his stumps sticking out from his shorts. He used sit on Sixth Avenue in the around 43rd St. Nice guy.

Boohoo. So half the guy's face can be seen on a poster about diabetes. Big deal. If he wasn't going around giving interviews about it I doubt anyone other than his close friends would recognize him. And even if people recognized him, how would this hurt his career? He's an actor. Since when is posing as something you're not a problem for an actor??

Yeah sorry, what's the problem with this? It's an advert, they're just selling an idea the image doesn't need to be factual.

Don't tell me you actually believe the before and after photos in infomercials...

It should also be noted that the advertising doesn't seem to include any kind of testimonial in the style of "This is John, he lost his leg, etc. etc.". Makes perfect sense that the picture in the background is just illustrating the idea.

Also, getting $500 to get your picture taken while sitting on a stool and looking bored. As a fat guy no less. That's a hell of a good fee. That guy was certainly not taken advantage of.
