Did You Switch To Contacts To Keep Your Cameras Happy?

Any former glasses wearers here who switched to contacts so you could see through your viewfinders better?

Did that work? Upside? Downside?

I'm going to my ophthalmologist next week to talk about just that. I've worn glasses so long that I'd talked myself into believing they aren't a hassle when using a camera. But, after extensive testing (playing around) I no longer think that. Too much hassle that I'd been putting up with for a long time. Besides, I need new lenses and frames, which will run about $600. That can buy a lot of contacts.

I'll need bifocal contacts. I wore contacts exclusively for more than 20 years, so getting used to them again shouldn't be an issue.

Funny you should mention it. I've worn contacts for ages, almost since they were introduced. I switched to mostly spectacles when I got a really good pair, though I still have my contacts. Both my specs and contacts are progressive (no the contacts are not monovision, but are each true progressives), and I do well with either; the contacts are RGP -- rigid gas permeable.

FWIW, RGPs are still better than soft, especially if you are dealing with multi-focal/progressives. The soft have gotten much better, but for ultimate resolution RGP have an edge. This, of course, is my opinion and experience, but my doc agrees. Ron, an optometrist on this forum, may disagree or add his views.

Lately, even though I have been mostly wearing my specs -- they are stylish indeed!-- I have been thinking I will go back to contacts for the majority of the time and for shooting. While I do OK with the specs, I know the contacts are better with regard to the viewfinder, and even though I try to be careful, I still get scratches on my specs from the camera.

YMMV

I've worn contacts since I was in high school (36 now). I wear glasses often now (as seen in my current avatar), but if i'm going to be shooting for a while, i'll put on my contacts. It's just more comfy. Although, I only have a 50mm lens for now, (for my M6) so seeing the framelines is easy with my glasses. If I ever get the 28mm lens that I want, i'll probably have to skip the glasses since I can't even see all the framelines with them on.
