When browsing this forum, I have been reading about the RD-1S - what is the difference between the RD-1 and the RD-1S and where can one buy an RD-1S? Is it just a software upgrade? Epson only sells the RD-1. I'm sure this is probably a stupid question, but I really could not find any answer anywhere.

The only difference is in the firmware upgrade. If you get the RD-1, you can easily update to the new firmware. If you get a refurbished RD-1 directly from Epson, it is already upgraded. I don't remember specifically the differences.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but the US only got the R-D1 -- anything on the Epson US website is basically 'NOS' -- while Europe and Asia recieved both the R-D1 and the updated R-D1s.

The differences between the two, I believe, are small -- firmware, which is upgradeable on an R-D1 body, and top plate design resulting in modified access to some of the alignment screws.

The two refurbished R-D1 cameras I received directly from Epson were NOT already upgraded. I had to flash them with the new firmware.

The R-D1 and R-D1s are different as far as my bodies are concerned.
With the latter, the screw dedicated to RF vertical alignment has not the same orientation and is smaller than that of the R-D1.
Also that screw is now inactive so that the only way to adjust vertical misalignments with the R-D1s consists in removing the top plate of the camera instead of the hot shoe with the R-D1.
Better know a good craftsman when the R-D1s is out of warranty.

The R-D1 is a great camera but the R-D1s has that really important and cool...."s"...

man that makes the camera work sooo much better........

without it...well ya might as well be using a Leica...hmmmmm

There are some further details on the differences on the Robert White site.
Nothing more than the R-D1 firmware update AFAIK.
The only hardware difference is the RF mechanism above IMHO.

Me too, haven't found anything else than firmware and alignment screw accessability. I have the feeling, there were less disalignment complaints about the R-D1s - at least here at RFF. Could be a hint that the QC was raised. But as said, this is an unproven feeling.
