I have seen the black ones and the satin chrome ones like my own, but am I wrong in thinking there was a third, with slightly brighter chrome too? I've seen one or two that looked "chromed". If so, does anyone know something of the history behind that?

During the war years and immediately after, Leicas seemed to have a somewhat brighter and coarser chrome. I think the quality was not so great. You will often find '40's IIIC's with flakes in the chrome, which did not seem to be the case in the prewar ones.

Cheers,

Thanks, I was sort of thinking of the really early ones in 1933 or so, that seems to have had a brighter shine to the surface, I think it is mentioned as "bright chrome". But maybe these were singular examples of cameras that someone buffed up to a shine?
