Hello all...I tried the Search function and didn't find any related threads, so I'll ask here. I have a newer 50/2 Summicron with the built-in retractable lens hood. Does anyone know if there is a attachable lens hood for this lens? Thanks.

I found the screw-in hood for the current Elmar 50/2.8 to be a good, small, and sturdy alternative to the collapsable (collapsing) hood for the current summicron. You can order the part from Adorama or other online merchants. It is a bit pricey, though.

I like a hood that will still fit inside a case with it attached. So I mate step up rings together until the case won't close or they interfere with the view through the rangefinder. It's very cheap, effective and looks good too!

The heavystar hood is nice. I use it on a different lens. It takes up quite a bit of space when it comes time to put the camera in a bag (or make-up case 😉 ), though. Personally, I prefer the B+W collapsible rubber hood, or the 12585 (I don't know if this will work with the current 50/2).

Is there something wrong with the built-in hood? The only nit I have to pick about it is that it collapses so easily that it provides scant protection for the front lens element.

The B+W collapsible doesn't give anywhere near the flare protection of the built-in hood for the latest 50mm Summicron. The built-in hood hugs the field-of-view cone about as closely as possible without vignetting. The effectiveness of a hood is a matter of angles between light sources and the front element, not size. A close-fitting cylindrical hood may be more effective than a significantly longer conical or wider cylindrical hood.

That said, I do use B+W rubbers for other lenses as well as a make-up case for my gear. 🙂
