Digital cameras are 'dinosaurs', declares Kodak chief

kodak sux. It's a center of non-innovation and has obviously lost out to other companies in the imaging technology field. This guy's comment about the camera being dinosaurs is pretty ridiculous in it's own right.

>Perez announced new areas of technology that Kodak is working on. These include >'e-moment technology'

Wha? does he propose we should be having something like the star trek's holodeck? What a douche-bag! Albeit it is a pretty good strategy from his perspective.. to talk down a segment of industry that his company failed to succeed in...

The latest Hassleblad 39mp back, sensor made by...Kodak.

So much for their not being innovative.

Sigh.

I laugh without any pity when my friends digital cameras run out of batteries. That's for the dinosaurs and stuff. And I'll laugh when harddisks will crash or cds become unreadable. 😉

Do you laugh when they beat you like eggs? Cause that's what would happen if one of my friends laughed at me when a hard disk died.

I laugh when I run out of meds. Then I break stuff.

I'm systems administrator, so I can tell you seeing a hard disk fail causes me no emotions at all. But that's a human feeling to believe that we live in a world were all is secure and faultless. The key is backing up. But even then I'm not confident (and I've all the reasons of the world to believe so) that saving digital data is safer than storing negatives.

I do break stuff too, especially old harddisks!

Digital backups can be stored in more than one physical location and the copies are identical. Negatives cannot have perfect copies, nor can they be in two places at once.

One fire, tornado, flood, etc - and if your negative is destroyed, your photo is gone. Guess that happened to a lot of priceless negs in the 9/11 disaster.

Offsite backups of financial data were not destroyed.

No contest. I love film, but there is no comparison in terms of safety - if proper safeguards are met.

yay! glad to hear this joke! that you know it means you're really from our world, not one of these "vanilla" outta here! 😉 I could code, but I chose the way of the lazy ones! Revenue will increase when I'll be passing my exams to reach a higher position in the information systems staff in Paris (working for frenchie govt) 😉

That's correct, that's what I'm working on among other things -- redundant, physically independent/distant backups 🙂

Okay, enough about computing! what was the topic ? 😕 😀

It's easyer to charge batteries or get some AAs at the next gas station then getting film.

One BP511 and two 1GB CF cards equal 10 rolls of film. So it may take a week or two until you get something to laugh about 🙂

The pro backs are a whole different ballgame from the sensors used in consumer-level products.

That is true. The statement was that Kodak 'sux' because they do not innovate. Do they innovate, or do they not? If they do, then the statement is incorrect.

And I seriously doubt that they'd innovate in 'pro level' kit and not have that technology trickle down to their consumer grade stuff at some point.

Whether Kodak 'sux' or not is a personal question and I understand anyone who has feelings against Kodak for the way they've behaved or the stupid choices they've made in the past. But to say they do not innovate - puh-leeze. Just admit you hate them for personal and emotional reasons and get on with it.

I dislike Microsoft. Purely emotional. But I don't think they do not innovate.

I always carry film with me, and no problems to find film here. 😉

It is getting harder to find it at the consumer level here outside of the big box stores. Grocery stores may have it, but the boxes are usually dusty and out of date. That's my area, yours may differ.

I predict it'll have high ISO noise. :bang:

Well, based on your demonstrated technical analysis abilities to date - I'll buy more Kodak stock. In fact, tell me what else you think sux - I needs to make me some more money and betting contra - you seems to be a money maker.

Kodak has either lead or stayed near the head of the pack with each advance in sensor technology. Don't count me as one of the Kodak naysayers.

At 39MP I doubt noise will be a major problem. Increased resolution usually indicates that artifacts (Noise or aliasing)will be greatly reduced.

I find it funny that people are not as critical when film exhibits increased grain at high ISO's, yet they relish the opportunity to mention how bad digital can be at high ISO's.

I think it has to do with sensor density, but I could be wrong here. The high-ISO noise often comes from the tiny 1 1/8 sensors, less from the larger ones.

I think some folks still think that there is a 'war' to be fought and won. The war, if there was one, is long over.

BTW- I'm taking both film and digital to todays classic car show at La Jolla- Fun! An Argus and a Fuji in the same bag. Oh my!

The Argus will have some Kodak in it.

😉

And then, of course, Dinosaurs are not dead,in the mind of the public they are still alive; the kids in my practice love the little plastic models of them and Jurassic Park was a blockbuster 😀. I think all these "new-new-new"marketeers have a point in that the Human race loves to have bright new coloured beads to play with - for a short while, but they forget that if you ask a kid to make train noises, it will go choo-choo-choo without ever having seen a steam engine.

And then there are some who theorize that dinosaurs never really "died out," but "simply" evolved into birds. Perhaps that will happen to the current digital cameras --- they will exchange scales for feathers and simply fly away. 😉 (In that case, it's good I have a nice heavy Yashica Lynx 14e to anchor me down, when my plastic Canon digi-point 'n shoot leaves the nest 😀 )
