Digital Nikon FM2 ?

If nikon makes a digital fm2 they have my money. I would use it along side my fuji x system. A large part of me is skeptical though - I still have nightmares about nikon menu systems and control layout issues from my d300/d3 days. The camera would need to be simple. I would give up small size to have a decent optical viewfinder and fm2 style control layout.

Exactly how I feel. Somehow I think we will be disappointed.

These threads remind me of the Janis Joplin song.

"Oh lord, won't you buy me, a Mercedes Benz (full frame compact, mirrorless etc)

My friends all dive Porsches, (Leicas) I must make amends!"

😀

The rumor says its does this.
Rumors say this and that, then when the camera comes out things are often very different.

The "FM3D" had been rumoured in the early 2000's already :

If that new thing matches the last rumor, then it as aimed at the mature photographers crowd being former F/F2/F3/FM2 users and wanting to mainly use their Ai and Ai-S primes on a simple yet very capable FF digital camera body.

What many people like that and getting tired of waiting for Nikon to release that photographic tool are now doing with the D700 they bought eventually.

Of course I seriously hope that Nikon is making it real. Yet... I'll believe it when I see it.

Here's hoping we don't get the self lubricating sensor from the D600!

As an owner of a nice fleet of Ai and Ai-S lenses which I acquired in the 1980's (then never sold out), I have that Mercedes Benz wheels and seats already, so if someone made the engine and hood, this wouldn't be bad ! 😉

I can't get excited yet. There are so many ways for Nikon to f this up ... if it's even true.
I'm less excited than what I would be now that I have bought a mint second hand D700 for less than one grand. At least do I have something very very very nice to mount my Nikkors on, even if its larger and heavier than the Sony A7 !

Too little, too late for some of us.

Lots of folks like me have learned (while waiting years and years for Nikon to do this) is that APS size sensors are just fine for our needs and we use those old manual focus Nikkors on our Dxxxx's and they work just fine too.

If they did bring out something like this I'd personally hope it didn't look like an FM2. I've never regarded that series as being particularly attractive cameras. To me they've always looked busy and cheap.

Yes ... burn the heretic! 😀

Not the prettiest perhaps, sure beats their SLR design 😀

Agree, both SLR giants left me unimpressed me in the last few years, while the likes of Fuji and Sony are really pushing with interesting stuff
Btw, are you considering an A7 John ? 😀

Just now that I've bought a D600 last summer, with all those superfluous bells and whistles... Can't even get it to use a single focus point with an AF lens, 11-point AF is the lowest I can get to :bang:

Thank god the D600 does perform very well with AI lenses. Still, it's an ugly hump to haul around...

I am watching this closely. My FM2 is my Leica M6 twin brother from Japan. Their main difference is that all of the dials turn in opposite directions.

I am hoping the Fuji X series has proven to camera companies that photographers want manual controls. I am hoping that a camera company other than Leica will realize that plenty of people do not mind manual focus. I would not even mind an advance lever instead of a motorized shutter. I could even live without an LCD and shoot only raw.

That would be sweet. RAW, ISO, shutter speed dial, shutter button. Simplest digital camera of all time, easy to master.

I am dreaming but, I just would LOVE a FF digital in the true spirit of the FM2. Don't tease me rumors...

I guess it is a hoax, sounds too dreamed-up, but I would love to be proven wrong. 🙂 Maybe the totally opposite direction compared to almost anyone else in the business is the right thing.

It strikes me as up-the-wall as if Pentax (also known as Ricoh nowadays) would issue a FF SLR.

Would be cool if its true but I don't think it is, they would never sell enough of them. Pretty cool though a full frame body 5.5 fps and lighter than a Canon 5d?
