- I agree, the D-SP looks more fiction than reality.
- Batteries are very reliable now days, conservative as Leica couldn’t resist.
- The major advantage of RF camera over SLR is its Veiw/Rangefiner for many people.
- The main reason of D40’s success is because it gets rid of all mechanical parts in the body to make it priced attractive. It even does not work with AF-D lenses for AF.
- With D3/ D300 coming up the D200 price is dropping, it might be a good time to get one which is compatible with AI & AIS lenses.
2) Batteries are OK...I don't hate them
3) I am sure Nikon won't mess with that part
4) $500 price tag and 10MP didn't hurt
5) I know some who use old Non Ai lenses with D70s

4) Very nice $500 full-metal-jacket compact cameras with 10MP and lots of semi-pro features do exist already (Canon )
Shame on me!!!

Canons with Nikkor lenses, a very old idea.

I think it's very possible that Nikon or/and Canon will come out with a DRF. Why - cause they alreadt have all the other kinds. They are the biggest players in the game and surely see that RF world, while small - is very popular and people will pay some serious money for a such thing. I'm sure they wouldn't object to an opportunity to grab some RF business. Even more so now that Cosina and Zeiss have many lenses that sell well. I'm sure day will come. And who ever does it - Canon , Nikon or anyone else - it will make them that much more popular. Just my opinion.

Lets talk about this subject in-depth.
http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/m...tory/01-11-2006/0004247596&EDATE=Jan+11,+2006
Since Nikon annonced back in 2006 that they are discontinuing their film cameras ,except the F6, it was obvious that they are sinking all their Research and development budget into Digital.
I have been watching the company closely for years now(as my nickname indicates), I have watched them re-vamp their coolpix line every 6 months, new digital SLR every 9 months and new prosumer cameras every 18 months to 2 years.....Flag-ship cameras are being updated every two years.
I posted this thread early in 2006:
http://nikonhistoricalsociety.yuku.com/topic/691
Now, everyone knows Nikon just announced the D3 and D300 along with a host of new coolpix cameras, they cranked out 5 new lenses as well.
What's left to do?
Do you think they'll slow down now?
Right when they became the top digital SLR seller in Japan, surpassing Canon.
What's next?
I have a feeling we will kno within a few months.

we will wait for Nikon's offering.
better not spend money on any photo gear from now on.
will put the money away, maybe sell some gear towards the Nikon DRF .
this could be very very good.

considering Nikon has done some risky things like their S3 and SP re-issues and the F6 when it would clearly be a small production run,
I am guessing we probably will see this camera.

One can only hope.....
I do find the whole auto focus bit confusing though.

D1H, D2H, D2X & D200 meter AIS and AI lenses
I have an D1H and there is a setting that allows me to use AI and AIS lenses with 2 kinds of metering, just set it in Av mode. I have tested D2H and D200 cameras and they are more advanced, they allow setting of the lens focal length as well. So Nikon has not left AI and AIS lens owners on the roadside as you put it.
As far as a Nikon DRangefinder, I'm all for it!

f2eyelevel said:This sounds to be pure... ahem, a rumor and that's it.
Several years ago a rumor was insisting that Nikon would release a FM3D, that would have been : a FM3A with the 17x24 CCD sensor taken off the D70s, but with semi-auto and manual metering modes only, no AF, but the ring and dot around its F bayonet for mounting the AI and AI-S lenses on that body and get light metering.
That was pure... ahem, a rumor. We could even see photos of the camera on fantasy blogs like the one which is linked to on this thread.

So, I for sure don't expect that rumor about that "digital SP" to be true. Pure... ahem, rumor.
BTW I don't see the point of having such a "digital rangefinder". Rangefinder cameras are nice in that they don't need batteries, have a full mechanical shutter, an optical focusing system, silent modus operandi, etc.
As soon as a camera needs a SD card, a battery, a firmware, a LCD screen, an electronic shutter to work, well, I prefer that camera to be a (D)SLR for the comfort of the viewfinder and the AF, plus the matrix and spot metering etc.
What I would want from Nikon is that they do not continue to leave the AI and AI-S lenses owners on the roadside. Being obliged to buy at least a D300 to have metering with my AI-S lenses for which I paid top dollars not a century ago is beyond me.
An updated D40x (which is a entry-level small plastic body yet 10MP sensor rich and has enough features to take good photographs once in the hands of an experienced photographer) with the coupling ring and dot for mounting the AI-S and AI lenses and having at least one metering mode (central weighted is fine) plus AE-lock is hundreds of times more expected by many Nikon nuts than this so-said digital RF mounting lenses that don't exist yet !

Well, with a "short" (e.g. collector-minded) run, I think all Leica will need is Zantac, not St. John's Wort, to deal with their decision.CameraQuest said:true or not,
just the rumor will be giving Leica and Zeiss nightmares.

Last night I dreamt the Nikon intoduced digital rangefinder camera that had similar body lines to a Nikon S2, but it had electronically projected frame lines in the finder.

Things that go bump in the night ...
How about this ... a Nikon FM-D SLR and RFS-D RF camera that share the same basic housing, derived from the FM3, making a smallish production run economically feasible.
