digital rev video review

I have to disagree with the above statement. I have seen Kai's work before and he is a competent street photographer. It's one of the reason why his reviews are one of the very few I would even bother to look/watch.

Photographers are half nerds to being with hence the reason why photography is often referred to as a "nerd's art" (of course ASCII art is also another nerd art) I'm sure there were people who complained about daguerreotype being too tech savy for their time as well.

Yeah, The guy owned RD-1 and shoots a M8 ,M2 now... I would value his opinion when he says he likes it

Could you point me to some of his photographs? I will reserve my opinion till i see some of his work.

I really like this guy's approach ... he seems crazy at times but he also talks a lot of sense.

In the end it doesn't matter what anyone says about this camera now because inevitably it will fall short of some people's expectations and using or not using it will be a personal choice based on each individual's needs.

Too many people were expecting FF DSLR performance for a fraction of the price IMO and although I'm sure it will improve with firmware upgrades it's still a compact.

Where's mine ... I want it now! :p

That said, it's a darn sight better than any other compact I've tried...it left my S90 for dead at anything over about 400 ISO, at least where image quality is concerned. It's much more on par with an APS-C dSLR, which is still a leap ahead of most compacts - and it's at least the equal of my R-D1s, which I think is better than an M8...M9, not sure. (At high ISOs, almost certainly. At low ISOs, in print, possibly not.)

I'm with you, though - where's MINE?!
R!

I'm not really sure why so many people are comparing the X100 to compact cameras, like the S90/95, LX3/5 and even to an extent micro four third cameras like the Panny GF1. The chip is much bigger and its quality really reflects competion with mid range DSLRs like the Nikon D7000 and Canon 60D. Its way beyond an S90. Its just that being mirrorless it can me compact, but the chip is in no way compact.

I should have said 'fixed lens' ... that's it's main limitation IMO.

Certainly not the sensor size!

Ah it's not like he can just make great pictures while he's being followed by a video rig, testing the camera, and talking about it at the same time.

This review only made me want it more. Plus did you notice how good that video sample was? I'm thrilled.

And a fixed lens is not a limitation as much as it is a reality. You just make the image work for your field of view. I like to keep things simple so for me this is the ultimate.

Rant:
I work better with limited choices (probably because i am male and cannot multi task :) ). With fixed lenses i find myself getting into "the zone" quicker. Of course it means i cannot shoot that seagull over the skyscraper, but its liberating in certain ways. I observe more and take more time to think my pictures through. But thats just me...

Thanks for teaching me a new word today!

In my opinion, digitalrev reviews are how reviews should be. He is actually walking around and using the camera. From there you can get a sense of how it would be to use this camera for yourself. Watching the review, he seems to genuinely enjoy photography as well as the x100.

I also like how he sums up the pros and cons of the camera in very practical terms. Granted he does not go too in-depth into technical capabilities and details, but that is what a written review is for.

agreed.

This sort of user experience video (camera in the wild) is a great adjunct to a comprehensive technical evaluation/test of the device.
IMO, Dpreview and others should consider a 'user experience video' in addition to their technical test procedure for some of their high-end camera reviews.

Man I'm really at a crossroad here.

I'm quite fond of my GF1 for pretty much all of the same reasons as Kai likes the X100, though the high iso abilities leaves something to be desired on the GF1.

I really love so many things about the X100 and honestly I'd love to have one, but I think I'll wait until the price point comes down a bit (which it inevitably will) before I pick one up.

Thanks for sharing this review though!
