I just had some xpan negatives (I rented the camera for a few days) scanned by my local photoshop. The dimensions on the scan though are not 3:1. That is, if I make the vertical dimension 4 inches, the horizontal dimension is only about 10.9 inches.
Aren't the xpan frames 3-times as wide as they are high? Did they cut-off part of the frame?

Well, looks like I just answered my own question. The xpan negative is actually 24 x 65mm not 24x72. Guess that explains it!

What size do you tend to print these (without changing the ratio)? I can send a 4x10.6 to my local lab and have them print it on 8x12 paper so that's what I'm going to try, although it leave it with a funny border that I can just cut away I guess. I cropped a few to a 3:1 ratio to print on 8x12 paper and that looked pretty nice, even with the white border on top and bottom.
