Dirty Cameras

Today I got a Lynx 14 from ebay, in my way to work. I open the box at the mail and I see the dirtiest camera ever I bought.

Now at work, with a tooth brush and a small piece of fabric, I put the camera to shine within five minutes. True, I will have to open the top casting for inside cleaning, blah blah blah.

This is not the first dirty camera I got. But it certainly is the award winning. Can you understand this phenomena ? I cannot, truly.

- Do these sellers think that the customers are going to continue purchasing from them afterwards ?

- Do they care at all about making a client followship ?

- Don't they want to sell ? Are they demoralized by low income or home problems ?

- Do they think such a dirt doesn't tell anything about the seller and his approach to cameras, and camera checking before auctioning ? Do they look us as idiots ?

- Don't they understand that in exchange of 10 minutes cleaning they can display at their auction ads a shining camera, thus raising the starting bid and the end result ? I cannot understand it. Perhaps you do.

Cheers,
Ruben

I have never understood why some eBay sellers have detailed photos of obviously dirty/dusty or just plain grungy merchandise in their auctions. Perhaps these sellers think that the accumulation of dirt lends some sort of authenticity to the product, especially if it is old/antique.

OTOH, I just think that some folks are too lazy to bother to clean things.

It's always the same. When I worked in a second hand shop (like a pawn shop, but without the pawning license) people would bring in their stereo's, tv's PS2 and XBOX consoles covered in crap, and every air vent would be filled with cigarette residue.

My boss kinda liked it, the dirtier, the cheaper you can buy it in for, then *I* had to clean it for 5-10 minutes so it could have a nice mark-up on the shelf.

Personally I hate seeing things I own looking grimey, and always give something a spit-shine before i even consider to sell it (selfishly, the nicer it looks, the more money you can hope for)

Maybe the seller's thinks that part of the fun in buying a vintage camera is in the cleaning and restoration process? 🙂

But personally, I would sell a neat looking item. Even if it is not functioning perfectly, it should at least be clean.

DIRTY CAMERAS, "DIRTY" SELLERS?

DIRTY CAMERAS, "DIRTY" SELLERS?

Hi Ruben,

In two years, I've made some 30 eBay purchases... PC peripherals, sandals, electronics & photo gear. Ninety plus percent of these have been A-1. Ocasionally,
a Seller is a 'dog,' and just doesn't care.

When my father of blessed memory went to Law school, the students had to know Latin. "CAVEAT EMPTOR"... Let the Buyer beware.

I'm confident, that the Lynx... in your hands, will soon be good as new 🙂
BTW: I had the front element of the 42mm f 2.8 Zuiko replaced; there was a spot
on it which couldn't be removed.
Cheers,

Hi Mike,
Great news we have a repairman able to cope with lenses. Great ! Perhaps he may be able to clear fungus as well.
Cheers,
Ruben
