I just got my first FSU rangefinder and despite the seller's claims of minty-ness, the rangefinder mirror has come undone: looks like the balsam has expired. I would like to get the top off, confirm, and repair, but it's proving difficult. I have the rewind side taken down to where I need it but the speed control knob and the various rings around the rewind shaft (the stuff that goes with the meter that I wish I hadn't bothered with) are still eluding removal. The set screws are out.

Any clues for the clueless? Rick Olesen has been consulted but he's never had one of these.

Once the knurled rewind knob pops up (press in the center
and turn CCW), all you should have to do is unwind the knob
and then go down with a tool of some sort to remove the
slotted securing nut. You don't have to take the periphery screws off.

Hmmm. The rewind knob was easy. I don't see a nut or fastener in the center of the various ASA/exposure dials. I see what looks like a spring clip, like an E or C clip but in a full circle. :bang:

Gah, it looks like those bits stay on the top. So I guess it's the shutter speed knob that's holding things together. The set screws are out but I have no idea how it comes off.
