Although its not on the front page like it was, the problems of the Japan earthquake are long lasting, especially to those who were evacuated and homeless.

This excellent Los Angeles Times story gives a good overview to the problems the refugees face. Personally I had no idea there was such a difference in mentality between the Japanese countryside lifestyle and big city Tokyo.

itunes is selling the 'songs for japan' collection of 37 songs from various artists with the proceeds going to the releif effort.

it's an interesting collection, lots of songs i would not normally buy but i am enjoying the experience.

I work in some quite remote and rural parts off Japan and I can understand how those people feel. Tokyo is an amazing place to visit and live but the life for most rural Japanese people is nothing like that. Where we work out off normally (Ugata in Mie prefecture) people will stop in the street to talk to you, an opportunity to practice there English or just chat to somebody new. Tokyo, like any big city can be cold and impersonal. The Japanese have extremely strong family bonds and strong tie’s to friends, being forcibly moved away from one’s home town is very bad.

The saddest thing I seen was about a week after the disaster they started broadcasting the daily deaths in the refugee centres. Old people had survived the earthquake and the tsunami were just giving up, they had lost everything, family, friends and there community, now there was nothing left to keep them here.

Japan is the most amazing place I have ever been, the people are amazing, the countryside is stunning. Every other month when I arrive in Japan it’s like it’s all new again, never the same twice. I have a lot off respect for the Japanese and we should do everything possible to help them.
