Do Canon end caps suck ...

Canon FD 50/1.8, 50/3.5 macro and 28/2.8, all in bayonet. I can't get the original Canon caps to turn all of the way to lock on any of them, but a Tamron end cap will turn until it locks.

I never ever had a problem with new FD only FD with the "ring mount" can be sometimes tricky - but if you don´t hassle and do it slowly even this is no problem.

#1 There are two notches on the FD lens caps. The one centered in it's flange goes to the top of the lens.
#2 With the FD lens, the index dot on the locking ring has to be lined up with the top of the lens. The newer FD's will lock there, the older one's won't.

Yes, the cap must be indexed properly, which means though the flange can go into the three ways, only one of these ways will work. The cheap white plastic caps which came on Tamron or Sigma FD lenses work best, and can be put on with no fuss.

In my experience newer canon caps do kinda suc,k same with nikon caps. Tamron caps, on the other hand are amazing. They fit every lens I've used them on perfectly. I've gotten so paranoid about loosing original caps that I usually buy cheap Chinese ones on eBay, which generally tend to have a more secure fit.

I don't have, and have never had, an FL lens. That is not to say that I do have the end caps that were original to the lenses, though. I do seem to have two different varieties of Canon caps. One has the notch in only one flange, with an arrow on the back that points to the index mark. The other has identical notches in all three flanges. The Tamron cap that seems to work properly is more similar to the second variety. But maybe it is the Tamron cap that works differently than Canon intended. Should the cap rotate fully until you need to press the release button in order to remove it?

Can't say I've had experience with FD caps, but the EOS caps always treated me well. I have a Canon LTM cap that stays on some of the time, but I'll agree that Tamron's have always been spot-on, no matter the mount.

You're right, they are a pain in the neck, since there's only one way that they mount correctly. "Fiddly" is an apt term.

A lot of people favor the earlier FD breech mount, but that mount is a pain also since the ring must be in exactly the right position for the lens to mount. Very hard to do one-handed.

The main thing is you have to line up one of the notches with the pin in the mount. The FL caps only have the one notch, which makes them a little harder to get on right the first time. The FD caps were made to fit either mount, but seem more problematic with the FDn's.
