Purple cast? Huh? Yes, I have seen it. But check your temperatures. Your fixer should also be at 20 C or 68 F. I just developed two rolls of Neopan 1600 - 5 min in DDX, 2 min stop rinse, 2.5 min in Ilford Rapid Fix, 1 min rinse, 2 min in Zonal Pro Archival rinse, 5 min water rinse and 1 min in Photo Flo. Done. No color cast.

My chart says 5 minutes tri-x, 10 minutes tmax. since neopan is a fairly "newer" film i would fix for ten minutes, hypo clear for 5, wash for 10, photo flo etc

OK how much colour is considered bad cast ? I just did a test strip of HP5 in Ilford RapidFixer and it takes 4 min to clear, so i guess that's 8 min for exposed negs ? a 10 min rinse later and it's still slightly purple but I cant get it to go crystal clear, is this good enough or bad ?

I fix Tmax films for longer than stuff like TX, PX, and other films. I usually do twice the clearing time + some. Works out to be 4ish minutes for TX, 5-6 for Tmax.
I can never get the purple out of TX. I do fix, wash, HCA, wash. It just doesn't come out. Funny thing is, with the same sequence, the Tmax comes out nice and gray. The one roll of PanF+ I've shot was also purple as hell...
Part of it is various dyes, but I also wonder if part of it is the color of the base material.

I agree with JeffGreene, HypoClear will clear the 'Purple Haze' and I've had to increase my hypo times for Tmax100, too. I now use a hypo time equal to the length of a famous Hendrix record.

Tech sheets are very helpful in this regard. If one reads them development & fixing times are usually given.

So what's wrong with slightly purple negs anyway ? Does it absolutely have to be clear ?

I usually just fix all my films for 5 minutes; never seem to have a problem.

I have worked with slightly purple negatives, no problems. Now under fixed negatives do create problems.
