Do I have a problem in my M8 ?

I have just bought a new M8.

When I enlarge the picture on the LCD (during the Review Mode) by spinning the central dial I notice that the pixels in the picture takes a while to settle in. For a second the pixels in the picture are fuzzy and unfocussed before they settle into a sharp image on the screen.

I am sorry if I am unable to put it in more exact words.

I use an Sandisk Extreme II 2GB memory card.

Do I have a problem with my camera ?

I may be wrong, but on some cameras when you preview your pictures on the lcd, they first show a quick crappy quality in-built jpeg preview which is fuzzy and pixelated while loading a higher resolution preview which comes a second or so later. This can also be seen when working in adobe lightroom or adobe bridge etc.

I'm pretty sure thats what you're talking about - if so, it's normal.

Its normal. Many digital cameras do this, its because it takes a moment for the camera to enlarge the photo, its basically showing you a rough look so you can find what you want to see faster then it opens it all the way.

Mine does the same as do most digital cameras when previewing ... no worries! 🙂

I also use an Epson R-D1 but there is no such "lag" in its LCD. The M8 has a larger LCD. Could that be the reason for the difference ?

Only indirectly. A smaller file = less processing time

Or perhaps it is mimicking the film development like the other Ms...
Just quicker.

It's normal. Compared to my IDs II the Leica M8 is a bit slow when handling both DNG +jpg 'fine'-files. The more bits to be handled, the slower it goes. Try cutting out the jpg's and make them in P1 instead. The reason the M8 jpg's look so bad right out of the camera is the limited computer capacity of the M8.

No; that is normal behaviour with not-too-fast memory cards. I have a few cards that are very slow and exhibit the behaviour (not "problem") of trying to display the preview as fast as it can be read.

Some cameras provide some "ahead" caching for previewing or have come up with ways to recall a preview without any post-processing in-camera.

That said, I'd say it's a firmware design issue on top of a hardware (e.g. memory card) issue. I don't trust SanDisk hardware at all; try Kingston, Patriot, even "high-end" Lexar.
