Do I Really Need Another DSLR??

Hi all,

Yep just asking myself that question tonight, I've been using the Micro
4/3 rd's for about two years and having my Nikon D300 with lenses just
sitting there only to be used twice this year. I was just looking at other
DSLR's and thinking will they be left unused as well, and now with just
receiving my Fuji XE-1 with the C size sensor this could change it for me
for good!

I have never used a DSLR, and I don't feel that I need such a camera. Use your m4/3 cameras plus the Fuji.

The first one that has really tempted me. I resisted and bought an F3 for $75. Lots of fun for less than the sales tax on the D750, but that really does seem like a great camera.

Do you "want" one? - Perhaps. Only you can know.

I've never "needed" any of the cams that I've bought throughout the last years.
But I "wanted" them all. 😉

I have zero interest for another DSLR while having two and using them periodically.
I have much more interest for modern compacts and checking new ones, but they still aren't capable of what my old DSLRs are.

I sold the D700 and never looked back. My Nikon glass is used exclusively with an F3 these days.

I bought xe1 two weeks ago, my first digital camera - I was tempted since they have a bundle with 35mm f1.4 for €750. But I still have not used it... So I can't imagine what I would do with more digital cameras...

I also am using M43 , thinking it would replace my old D300 - however for Sports and also low light / long exposure there are significant advantages to DSLR
I got the D750 recently and am very happy with it - a lot more compact than the D800

now the question is do I get enough use out of the M43 kit - I will probably wait to see the next gen Olympus OM-D before making a decision

M43 is really great - I've printed pretty large 16"x24" and was very pleased with the results. but the focus is not fast enough for high school track and field

I use my DSLR perhaps only a few times a year. Maybe at Christmas with family, maybe for work when the client wants interiors or product shots. Rangefinders, m43 and large sensor compacts handle everything else, and the interiors and products can often be handled by m43 anyway, which only leaves Christmas.

I've even shot marathons and track races with the Oly EM-5, as the tracking isn't as bad as it could be. It's not wonderful, but it's good enough for me to get the shots I want.

As far as I'm concerned, with the cameras you own, the D300's value is for action photography. In my experience the D300's AF is an excellent, reliable tool for subjects in motion. While newer cameras will have better signal-to-noise ratios, I don't think their AF will be superior to the point where more money needs to be spent.

I have 2 DSLRs and a M4/3, and I have to say it's too much. Most of the time I use my 7D. It's kind of my work horse (includding scratches and scuffs on the body). My 450D and E-P1 I barely use.

For some reason I use more film cameras than digital ones. So I think as you dont use the D300 often, the other DSLR won't be used either. Maybe you can swap the D300 for a newer one or a new m4/3.

RR, I have sold a lot of my Nikon equipment and pared down to 6 primes, a 14-24 zoom and one body. I use the D800e for landscape and occasional architecture, thinking of and using it as I used to medium format film cameras---low ISO, smallish apertures, usually on a tripod.
It is very well suited to this task.

For everything else I use a Fuji X E2 and Sony NEX7.

If I didn't do landscape I'd sell the D800e, not because it's not highly capable, not because I would no longer like, even admire it, but because I'd have no need for it.

DSLRS are the most versatile camera type there is! I don't use mine as much as I do my Oly e-p1 paired with Panasonic 20mm f/1.7. However, when the time comes the big guy gets out of the camera bag, and it's time for rock'n'roll...

Get a full-metal old FSLR (Film) instead.

They are cooler-looking, will make you look hip on the streets and should you have access to a photo-lab, may even net you perfectly nice shots.
