Completely disagree with this idea! I guess it comes down to the difference between taking a good photo of something or making a good photograph. Both have their place... and I guess you are very clearly on only one side of this. Personally, I can appreciate a good photo of something, but for a photograph to really grab me, I want to see an image that transcends its subject.
looking at diane arbus' work always reminds me that the most important thing is the subject, and that other things like composition, depth of field, whatever, they're all secondary if you have a really great shot of someone or something really captivating.

You should never discriminate on who you take the opinions of or get information out of. Take everything with a grain of salt and judge everyone on an individual basis.
Sometimes good information is good information, regardless of who says it. A newbie photographer could give a piece of advice that they learned from a master of their craft. It doesn't make the information any less valid.
About the Chef and food critic debate. I think its all about how you express your opinions. The food critic that isn't a chief will have to defend his opinions more and give evidence to support his claims. Since the skills/taste of the chief are universally recognized, his words hold a more weight.

I didn't say that you did. I was just wondering.
Okay, good. I hope my response has gone some way to clarifying the matter.
However, you did wonder why some people post so much.
On the contrary, I know why - its because they like to talk about their interest. I argued that a possibility was that they may actually favour this over actually going out and doing it. Maybe.
Yep, and I'm only giving mine.![]()
Excellent. I do like balance in the Force.

Whilst I'm definitely interested in photographer's feedback on my work, because there's always plenty of room for improvement,
I always make sure to seek the opinions of non photographers too because we all get bogged down in the technicalities, techniques, methods and analyzing shots in our "visually literate" way (which is all well and good), but if an image works to someone who's not specifically looking for those things, then I'm doing something right

I don't favor it over photography, but some may. However, I favor it as an escape from my work during the times while I have to think of how to approach something difficult. It's a good balance at work. I can't photograph at work.

I'm not at all sure I agree with that. Over the years, I've been to various expensive restaurants and hotels, at other peoples' expense, I hasten to add. I have found that many dishes by 'great' chefs have not been to my taste, no matter how many awards they have won. Taste is a very subjective matter.

I don't understand this type of relativism, I'd never seek the opinion of a patient rather than that of a doctor or a driver before that of a motor-engineer ... yet as soon as the conversation turns to art or design then training and knowledge counts for nothing, and everyone suddenly becomes equal? ... I think not

So, when you buy a car, you always seek advice from a mechanic, rather than someone whom owns and drives one? Interesting Stewart, very interesting....

Photographers who consistently make great pictures inspire me, not necessarily pictures themselves. Whenever I come across a picture that catches my eye, I immediately think, "I need to see more." From there, I'm either really disappointed, or really inspired to try to create consistently better pictures.

Interesting view. I'd always seek the opinion of a consumer over that of a producer, if I want to know what the end result is likely to be.

Ah, I see myself as a photographer rather than a consumer ... or a patient if I'm ill or a passenger on an aircraft or driver or whatever ... I don't really see myself as consumer sorry

I wasn't using the term in the marketing but in the original sense. On one side, there are those who produce a product or service and on the other side, those who consume the product or service.
In this sense, the consumer can play an active or a passive role. An inmate of a gaol is, to a large degree, a passive consumer (he does't get a choice) whereas someone purchasing a meal at a restaurant is an active consumer, being able to send the food back if it isn't to his taste.
In that sense, I can't see why anyone would take the advice of a producer of any goods or service over that of those who have previously used the goods or service.
