Do you ever have that feeling it wasn't meant to be?

Yea so the never ending saga continues for me. I get home last night after going to the Orange County Fair to see the photo competition and decide to rewind the film in my camera right. So I flip the little switch, turn the rewind crank, feel it get loose after one rotation and it suddenly hits me..

You know that rule that every photographer is taught from day one about watching the rewind knob to make sure it is spinning and the film hasn't sliped off the spool. Yes well in all my haste of using the leica after 5 solid years of digital cameras guess what I forgot to do....

:bang: :bang: :bang: Someone take this camera from me. I am simply not worthy...

I agree: you are not worthy. PM me for my address and I will accept your gift willingly. And for those who would ask the question: YES, I AM WORTHY!

You have to do that every once in a while just to cement the lesson in your mind. I try to mess up film loading at least twice a year just so that i don't get too cocky.

My condolences!

My condolences!

Been there. Done that. Spent an entire morning in Grand Teton National Park making beautiful photographs with an EMPTY Canon EF.

Guess what? After doing it once, you will never ever do it again! 😀

Load up and get back out there!

PS: VictorM is not worthy. I am the only worthy one! 😉

Or perhaps shooting zone and shifting the reading the wrong direction due to severe temporary brain failure. And then trying to convince yourself that the shadows needed to be zone VII anyway...

This is exactly why my digital is set to not take photos with out a memory card! I Have done a good job about the lens cap, but then I rarely use them one, and two the damn thing falls off all the time anyways! I found it outside the shop I work at the other day after an hour or so of being open! There it was sitting on the side walk!

I have done it too!! now I always watch with the bottom open for a couple turns... peace of mind.

I really do feel like I am starting over some what. I learned on film and used to be a custom b/w printer and developer for several years, but then I stopped using it all together about 5 years ago other than slide film in the Xpan which I took to a lab so now I keep having to remember take more film! Flip the rewind switch! Watch that lens cap! Don't forget the ISO! Where are you going to process it?! Don't forget to pick up the film! NO YOU CAN'T SEE THE IMAGE ON THE BACK STUPID!

You always strive to have your camera become a part of you almost so that you do it all with out thinking, which I had that with film, then got it for digital, and now I have to relearn the film part! Scanning a negative.. whats that? 😛

And don't get me started on the zone system.. I know it works, I know its wonderful, I know I should know it, but numbers confuse me as it is, start making them with letters and I am beyond lost! Nevermind that I don't do processing anymore.. Or should I start again! Another thing for me to remember/challenge/ignore! 😛

well, such things happen. i shot digital for 2 years when o had to do some reproductions which had to be done in 6x6, i took my hasselblad and after about 14 pictures or so i realized that the film is not such long....just to see that i forgot to put a film in the magazine...
now i'm doing more analogue stuff (cause digital bores me ..) and i slowly get used to it: put a film in, watch the rewind knob and so on...

Personally I set the iso dial before I load the film. Then, during loading time, I make sure the rewind know is indeed rotating. I might even sacrifice one or two frames to be sure of that.

You have to watch the red dots rotate. You have to watch the red dots rotate.....

Just got a blank film back from a wedding I shot last week. I knew something on my MP was wrong and kept checking the the film tension and it was OK and the little dots moved enough to satisfy me. However, if this film was supposed to be exposed, is it possible the sprocket holes were damaged and when the film reached these the advance wheel were spinning in air.

Fortunately, I can't remember any missing frames from the 12x35mm and 5x120 films, so I'm OK.

I think the little men from Solms have put cutters on my advance wheels as the same thing happened a month ago and I did lose the shots.

Always unnerving when you get to 40 on the film counter ! 🙁 😀

I threw a camera away because of this. My Seagull (minolta md) slr just WOULDN'T take-up. It ripped a film, then on 3 occasions (a family get-together, and 2 attempts for shooting photo's for a final piece for photography) it felt like there was the tension, but of course it wasn't to be!

I usually waste about 5 frames each roll (that's why I bulk roll to 40) making sure its taken up before closing the back of the cam. I've caught myself taking photo's without checking, then glaring at that rewind knob to check everything is ok!

The best way you can avoid the trouble (which I found works best on those dodgy Fed take-up spools) - TAPE the leader to the spool. Only with something like packing tape, but it means the leader isn't leaving the spool!

Chris: I have met Victor, seen his prints and can vouch for his worthiness. But since you're in SoCal and Victor is in Toronto, send the camera to me, as we don't want there to be any problems with Canada Post/Canada Customs.

Victor: I'll bring the camera to you .... uh, soon. Yeah, that's it.

but... but.... but... it isn't quite paid for yet 😛 so someone better play pass the money too! And not Canadian either.. I get confused by those looneys and tooneys things!

Red dots... on an M6.. 😛 wrong rewind knob but yea I know what ya mean! I'm still having issues with loading but its probably because I've loaded a total of 5 rolls of film in a leica my whole life so you know... takes practice!

I've stopped worrying about the ISO dial when I took the batteries out of my camera. Now I use Sunny F16 outdoors and a handheld spotmeter indoors. I love the freedom!!!!

This doesn't have anything to do with screwing up the film, but talk about feeling unworthy...

A year ago, I was walking around near Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. when I saw a bus stopping at a corner, and fire start dripping out the back. Literally dripping. Then the fire got bigger, and about fifteen people went running off the front of the bus. Then the fire got even bigger, burning up the engine compartment and the back of the bus, big gouts of black smoke going up in the air with flames. Then the fire department came and sprayed the whole thing with foam, until the fire was out.

Then I noticed I had my camera in my hand.
