I was wondering: Do any of you follow the photographer Carmen Gonzalez, aka Solea, on Flickr? As far as I know, she is the most famous of the self-made Internet photographers. She does alot of eerie, erotic self-portraits, among other work, some heavily post-processed. I really like her work. Based on the number of fans and followers she has on Flickr, she may just be the most popular photographer in the world. Although there have been interviews with her in the European press, I have never seen anyone specifically comment on the phenomenon of a self-made famous photographer like this.

P.S. Her photos are also frequently accompanied by her own poems.

I see your Solea and raise you one Rebekka Gudleifsdottir. Check out her multiple exposure self portraits:

Of course it doesn't hurt their popularity that they're both reasonably attractive women who take revealing self-portraits.

Thanks for the pointers to remarks about other such photographers. I did a quick look at Rebekka. I think Solea is head and shoulders better...ummm... no pun intended.

There is also the woman named "Quizz" on Flickr. http://www.flickr.com/photos/quizz/
I wasn't familiar with Solea, but it appears their aesthetic and popularity are similar.
I find their work kind of cheesy, but I think they'd make great Art Directors for advertising or movies.

I respect Rebekka, have followed her work for a long time. However, there are too many copycats/narcissistic/exhibitionist women (and men) on flickr that take self-portraits of themselves. Too many to mention, and generally I don't think there's much value to them except as a form of self-expression and narcissism.

I don't know about Solea being the world's most popular photographer, but I do know that , as far as I'm concerned, this woman's one of Flickr's most under-rated superheroes: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lydiannacat/ I think there's a phenomenal delicacy and intimacy about her self-portraits, much more organic than most of the images I see on Flickr.

Erotic female self portraits are popular? Shocking!

Solea doesn't seem to be my cup of tea, but yes, she knows how to attract a following.

As long as it's not a woman with a bunch of self por........nevermind.

I don't really get her either - it just looks like rather poor and sentimental fantasy art with added extra breasts to me (not that fantasy art has ever had a shortage of them), but it doesn't surprise me that it's popular.
But it always amazes me how many women on flickr have streams that are almost entirely erotic self portraits, there must be thousands, and yet I've only once seen similar work in real life.

I noticed once that these self-portraiting women have similar and often identical themes and post-processing techniques, which could mean they are feeding off each other's concepts and images and farting out duplicates for their own fan bases.

Seems to me Solea is still in a class by herself. It is rare for one of her photos to have fewer than 100 comments. Quite a few have many hundreds of comments. How many viewers does that mean a photo had - thousands? People even compete to be the first one to leave a comment. Was any photographer in history ever this popular? Call it what you want aesthetically - it is a remarkable phenomenon.

Anne Geddes is pretty popular, too.

For any image in those flickr sets previously mentioned, I could find, time permitting, the image chain from which it was derived/copied.

men just love those gazangas.
The thing that baffles me about it is how many women seem to like it as well. Men and breats, now that needs no explanation

In a word "no". While some of her imagery is interesting, moody, and beautiful, I feel no need to join her following. I find Flickr to be interesting this way, post images of a pretty, young woman, provocatively, and watch the hits grow. I find a lot of her work to be self aggrandizing.

A quote from her - "i am exposing myself again i know.. i am an exhibitionist... just a fact".
Enough said.
Maybe there'll be a Solea reality show someday!

Hey, she is the top of a gap that has recently been created, more power to her. It will all wash out in the future, she will either be a Chiluhy, Thomas Kinkade, or maybe she will become the Dali or Turner of the 2000s, it is too early to tell.
